Are there maps of the river and where could I purchase one? I moved to Timmins last fall and have been eyeing the river on Google Earth. I have maps for the Grassy and the Tatachikapika from the Conservation Authority but didn't see a map for the Mountjoy. Doing the loop part of the Grassy this summer.

Looks like a lot of fun . Looked like you could have used a little more water - What level was it and what time of year did you do it.. Allways good to see everyone zipped and clipped and wearing helmets :) I also liked the way you reviewed each section on the map .. I dont see that too often and if your a ww paddler like me it adds context to the next scene.. Yep watch out for those strainers. Thinking doggy lifejackets would reduce risk if you dumped and they got taken downstream , but also might snag in the bush when they would need to get back upstream on the shore ..

Hi Dan. Thanks so much for posting this. This video is one of the only sources of info on the Wakami River that I can find online besides a trip report from 2003. I'm planning to try this route starting from Sultan and then heading up the Rush River to Rush Lake. Apparently, it might be tough work from Sultan down to Ridout Lake. Any reason why you didn't start at Sultan? Your video gives me a great idea of what to expect from the bridge to the confluence with the Opeepeesway which I ran two years ago. Any further information that you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That's Progress !!! Perty hard to stop the exploitation of Mother Earth when middle income earners who build these dams to energize mines and other resources would kill each other to keep their job which they need to pay that huge mortgage and the toys needed to live the dream. It's all a big Catch 22 if you ask me... gotta serve someone to be normal in our society of warriors and civilians. C'est La Vie !!!! Mattagami Lake and this river are just part of a bigger story of commercial value vs respect for nature. The Hudson's Bay Company story which developed at the confluence of the Minisinakwa river and Mattagami river is really telling of this commercial stuff. We have to ask the bigger questions b ( and face being ostracized while challenging the polite stories ) like who was James Miller and how did he influence Chief Tonenne at Temagami river if we are to understand why they build these dams. At least that is my opinion. Whatever happened to Dan ? His treks up and down these northern rivers were so entertaining.

Love your grouse hunting videos! I hunt mostly big game but grouse hunting is just FUN! Especially when numbers are high. I can’t take my dogs because my girl, Scout, is very sensitive to noise and, so, the longbow is a very scary thing. 🙄 I can appreciate how difficult it is to make these films but please keep them coming!

hey there. I will be getting out and trying the bow on grouse again this year but what I want ask is about your dog in the woods. I notice that he/she is a a red heeler. Last year we got a corgi heeler cross and was wondering if yours does more than just come along when it comes to hunting. Now most of my hunting is much different as I'm usually flying my harris's hawk after rabbits , ducks and grouse ( which normally much to fast for her to catch) I'm hoping to use our pup for finding and herding rabbits into the open for our bird and that's why I ask what all your dog does while out with you.

Wow, amazing video Dan. This was such a gift to watch. Back in the early 90's I did a spring spec fishing trip up a tributary of the Groundhog in May. Water was really high. We only got one spec but we came upon spawning sturgeon. Heard big splashes in the creek but by the time we located the splash, whatever made it was gone. Finally we started seeing massive fins and tails breaking the surface and figured out what they were. I was only 20 at the time and had only heard of sturgeon from my dad, who'd seen them caught off the docks at Connaught. A few hours later, my buddy hooked into one in a narrow, fast flowing section of the creek. I was about 300 meters down stream, having a nap and being drained of blood by blackflies. He comes running down toward me, screaming "I got a sturgeon! I got a sturgeon!" I jumped up, ran after him for 50 metres, tripped and fell flat on my face, got up and followed him. When i caught up to him, he was standing on the bank, rod in hand. His line was taut in the water. He told tall tales sometimes so I didn't believe him. For 20 minutes I watched him work whatever was on his line, gradually getting it closer to shore. All of a sudden, out of the depths, this massive, 6 foot long gray fish appears. All I could think was "how the hell is there a shark in this creek?" I was awestruck, but frankly scared too. I'd never seen a fish that big in my life. My buddy says to me "get in and grab it!" "F*** you!" I said. "I'm not grabbing that thing!" I knew they had a bony exoskeleton and was a bit freaked out at the sight of it. Aswe're standing there trying to figure out what to do, the fish casually swims STRAIGHT ACROSS the raging, swollen, 8 foot deep creek, as if it was nothing. If I had walked out into it, the creek would have swept me down stream immediately, the current was that strong. Never seen anything like that in my life. A few mins later, the line snapped. My friend has never forgiven me for that...

Nicely paddled, and beautifully filmed. It was like being along for the ride. I love the high shots from the back of the canoe to give a really good look at the situation at hand. Very relaxing.
