been looking for a clean copy of the Hovhannes record for years. would be nice to see a reissue of it
@NotedArchived21 күн бұрын
Hi, Armen. I've seen you on the Classical stream with Anthony and Scott. Nice to meet. I found another original (and clean to the eye) of the Hovhaness, again - after multiple deep cleanings it still has a good amount of surface noise. A reissue of that and other slept-on LS titles would be amazing.

Hi Michael, thanks so much for this. I was able to order the vinyl repress of Será Una Noche on the MA site, however the Nima Ben David they did not have the Bangkok pressing, did you order direct from MA? Thanks.
@NotedArchived21 күн бұрын
I ordered both of those titles direct from M•A but made the video several months later. I believe the Nima LP went out-of-stock in that interim, sadly. Hopefully you can find one on Discogs or eBay. It's totally stunning! Hope you're enjoying the Será Una Noche. Incredible! Thanks for the note. Cheers,

Michael these were beautiful. And I could hear plenty of dynamics through your system and into KZbin even. Unaware of this label, will be looking into it. Curious about what their discography is like. The installation looked pretty wonderful too, special thing to get to do. Beautiful system by the way and well done!

A lovely tour around some glorious envy inducing premium vinyl there. Based on your choices I think you would love Britten’s Prince of the Pagodas. I don’t think it has been repressed yet but the 1970’s Ace of Diamonds GOS was released relatively late in the day so a nicely looked after copy holds its own against the current crop of high quality re- releases. Although it is true that from the RCA Living Stereo perspective things are pretty grim price wise in the UK I think one of the consolations is the abundance of very reasonable condition and price HMV/EMI second hand pressings from the 60s and 70s so my advice for UK collecting is to lean into those.

Michael, you have assembled a splendid assortment of classical recordings. I have yet to present the albums that I procured at the Goodwill. It has been over a year since I’ve purchased them. Classical music is so intricate that a new audiophile pressing is nearly essential if one wishes to avoid surface noise. I will keep my eyes open for the titles that you mentioned.

Classical Record Porn!!! I LOVE this whole new style of presentation! Even though I have many of these, I still found myself thinking "ooh! I must get that!!". One minor correction. The Classic Records 45 of the Paray/Ravel/Ibert actually OMITS the Ravel La Valse, which is such a daft decision. It's one of the highlights of the record. Thanks for the shout-out, btw. Looking forward to our next record scavenge.....

Hello Michael. Great to see your Classical collection. It's a very odd experience, as if I'm entering an alternate universe. The American Classical music audiophile vinyl release scene seems completely different to the UK and Europe, despite much of the music originating from the UK. First off, RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence records weren't released in the UK in anywhere near the numbers they were in the US, mainly because UK labels would record and release the same music for the home market. Obviously this also goes for orchestras, where you are very unlikely to see American orchestras on UK releases. The cover design and artwork always look totally at odds with the design choices made here. Almost as if they were trying to appeal to very different audiences. The repertoire also seems quite different. Now, I caveat this by saying perhaps it's the choices of audiophile reissue labels, or perhaps your own musical preferences. Of course there are universal similarities, but it seems to me the American repertoire is narrower and a trifle more populist. With lots of releases of mixed programmes of pieces, rather than complete works. Ballet music seems far more popular in the US, and skews towards the Romantic and modern periods. This isn't an observation based just on your video, but on a number of other audiophile classical music KZbin channels. No Baroque? Is this a period of music you don't gravitate towards, or is it not well represented in the audiophile releases? A fascinating video made all the more enjoyable by your fabulously soothing voice. I think you could have a career as a voiceover artist. Cheers - Hedley P.S. I very much enjoyed your recent album.
@NotedArchived6 ай бұрын
Cheers, Hedley - astute and valid observations on all accounts. I do love the Baroque but it does seem this era/style is oft overlooked by the few "audiophile" reissuers mostly gravitating toward the Decca, Londons, EMIs, RCA LS and MLP. Perhaps this is due to the sheer higher quality of those recordings and state of the analog tapes? Who knows. Thanks so much for the thoughtful response. And it means the world you laid ears on my newest album - thanks for that. So happy to hear it landed nicely for you. I always enjoy your videos here, as well. Looking fwd to the next. Be well and a cheery wave from LA.

This was such a great interview, with tons of interesting questions. New collectors don't fully appreciate Music Matters Jazz significance in the audiophile world. MMJ set a new standard for quality regards to pressings, jackets, mastering etc. Whoever denies that impact is either is a newcomer or has never hold a MMJ in his hands. There is something magical about those album presentations, the session photos, the sound, the glow. When they started there was NO vinyl resurgence and Jazz was not fashionable on the vinyl community .

100% accurate on all points, my friend. Thanks for the kind note. Hugs from CA. !!

One thing I'm still wondering is: Why would Music Matters (initially) intend on imitating the originals if Classics Records - just - finished a reissue program doing the same thing? That puzzles me, especially because Joe appears to have always had "audiophile" leanings, and IME audiophiles have long preferred more dynamics, wider (stereo) soundstage, etc., which OGs do not have. Perhaps that was more what Ron wanted at first? I also wonder if they intended to do 45 RPM from the very beginning or if that developed after they started. Put simply, I always wonder if there were any decisions made based on their realization that their main customer demographic was going to be "audiophiles" opposed to "collectors".
@NotedArchived Жыл бұрын
Rumor has it that Hobson forced Grundman to use a certain amp in his mastering chain when cutting those Classic Records BN titles because it lended some sonic characteristics akin to the OG. Joe apparently wasn't a fan of these pressings and was trying to do a better version initially when MMJ was conceived. As I understand, the 45rpm and the 33rpm were separate licenses from EMI at the time - which is why we saw Chad at AP cut certain versions at 45rpm and MMJ only later do those same titles as 33rpm. There was also allegedly a lot of push-back from the customer base about wanting the MMJs at 33rpm. Assuming the cost-effectiveness of a 33 vs a 45 in the cutting, plating and pressing was a factor as well. From my own gleaning throughout this conversation and from watching other interviews with Joe, it seems that they were just going for it with the MMJ series sort of blindly in the beginning - not knowing or really having any barometer to foresee what the reaction would be. Then, of course, it was received warmly from the audiophile collectors - especially the latter half of their run, as the resurgence in vinyl and the MMJ demand started to gain steam. Just my take - curious what other insights or info you have on the topic. BTW - I love your channel and your work in this world - thank you for your efforts. Cheers from Los Angeles. - Michael
@dgmono Жыл бұрын
@@NotedArchived Hi Michael. Yes Joe told me the same thing about the Classic series. It still doesn't make perfect sense to me that Music Matters would be setting out to do the exact same thing Classic did with the goal of simply doing it 'better'. Granted, my understanding is that the Classic reissues always had mixed reviews. (I honestly don't understand why the Classics aren't more popular with collectors, though while they sat around $20-40 used for a long time, they recently shot up closer to $100--like everything else "audiophile"). Well maybe in the end it really was just about hearing the master tapes in stereo and that changing their plans--and collaborating with Cuscuna for the photos.
