Why do your Crested geckos all have no tails..? Asking for a friend.
@homesteadreptiles22225 күн бұрын
Most of my geckos have their tails still crested geckos are prone to just ditching their tails if they get scared you could have a massive thunderstorm the Tails fall off. there's a thousand different reasons why they might not want to have their tails anymore. And when they lose them they dont grow back

What you write is widely known in the herpetocultural community. I also own several and all mine have their tails. I must add that I've been in this hobby for 45+years and currently own 12 reptiles that are over 22 years old. My Red Tegus is 23 and my oldest Spiny-tailed monitor is 25+ years old. One piece of advice that I would like to share with you is in regards to your handling of said Crested Geckos...please consider stabilizing your hand movements. Look at your videos and see if you notice excessive movements like sudden movements, turns, lifts and other eratic hand movement that might/certainly will frighten/scare these small creatures. You seem like someone who is genuinely interested in these creatures but you also come across as slightly inexperienced in handling them.

I grew up on a farm in the far North of Ontario Canada. Every spring on the top of the hill there was a hole where one day THOUSANDS of these snakes would emerge. All sizes from tiny babies to full grown adults. They would just pour out at a steady flow all morning. Some years there were more then other years but they were always there. It was big event for us to go stand there and watch them slither out and off in every direction. Its weird to think people want to keep such a common snake as a pet. Also that defense system! YUK! lolz.

You'd be surprised how popular they are. they're extremely popular in Europe and their popularity as pets are picking up in the United States. There are garter snake hobbyists that are willing to spend thousands of dollars on a rare garter snake mutation.

Didn’t see this, thanks for the video. I have also never used the growth and breeding formula. If we think about what these guys are exposed to in nature, I just can’t imagine they need a special formula specifically made for accelerating growth. Theres just no way a gecko on a proper diet isn’t getting caloric and nutritional demands met to the point of requiring something like breeding and growth. Accelerating growth beyond the natural progression seems unnecessary and I’ll always prefer a well balanced diet.

I have the opposite experience When it comes to handling my males vs females. I have only ever had 1 male that was easy the rest of them are very jumpy and do not like to be touched. My females on the other hand are very calm except for one, she's calm at first but if you hold her long enough she'll just try to run away from you. 3 of my females like being handled so much that if they see me near the enclosures they come up to the Glas it's very cute :). So I think it really depends on the animal and how much you handle them from a young age. But it's cool to see the different experiences people have. Also you're geckos are beautifull 😍.

What’s wrong with people is that they don’t understand the circle of life there’s certain animals snakes for example are used to breed that will not eat frozen or dead mice rabbits or anything else they need live food that’s when it comes down to if you don’t like it you just don’t get those animalsget animals that live on fruit and process food

The problem with people is that they can't have a pet and accept that they belong to a species that can be eaten. Dogs should also be okay to be eaten by other animals. You saying it's cruel makes you wrong. There is no right or wrong besides between humans. I also had a crested once, and I wouldn't feed it to other animals, but i can accept that specimens from that species can be eaten, and the same goes for dogs, as I have 2 and wouldn't let anything eat them
@homesteadreptiles22225 ай бұрын
Dogs are in a different category they're not labeled as Livestock in the United States if you grab a puppy and through it to a crocodilian to eat you would be arrested for animal cruelty.

The context makes a BIG difference - dogs and crested geckos are effectively taken out of their native ecosystem once we choose to take them home. In doing so we make conscious choices about their diet, safety and wellbeing every day, which is quintessentially NOT their natural way of living but also vital for their happiness and health. I'm not a fan of the idea of Cresties being feeders, even if it's done humanely and ethically, thought it's a better alternative to negligence if people insist on doing it. Cresties are endangered in their natural habitat so it just seems gross to reduce something that needs our protection to food when there's so many good existing options out there to keep snakes healthy. I am 100% opposed to people doing this for fun when the reptile store's intention is to give the little crestie a good home, and the new owner is violating their wellbeing and safety which seems unnecessarily cruel. The video made some pretty good points, and it's a discussion we need to keep having if this is really becoming a trend - but please don't use the "it's nature" adage, it's reductionist and not super constructive.
