1:18 It's canon that Joel and Ellie killed 76 Hunters before they even teamed up with Henry and Sam. Let that sink in... That makes them exceptional tough tourists! Also with Henry and Sam Ellie managed to keep the Hunters busy while Joel killed the sniper, sniped the remaining Hunters and shot the Humvee into a house. I think Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam really helped out any future tourists from the terror of the Hunters! I mean they canonically lost at least 76 of their men, they lost a sniper rifle/position and their humvee is destroyed (the interior got burned, the engine exploded and the vehicle got lodged in a house)! Also Ellie kills some Hunters in the sequel off screen. She writes about it in her journal which you can check in-game. I wish you could actually have done it or at least seen it in a cutscene but regardless it's badass!

Makes sense why they wouldn't focus on hand to hand combat because if you're using hand to hand combat against an infected you'll most likely be outmatched meaning range is the most preferable way of fighting.
