I like to use stock melee (fish) with the shortstop. A *chance* (even if it’s little) to kill an enemy in your face with a random crit is (in my opinion) better than suffering from the lower damage the shortstop does at close ranges.

pyro player here, all of the flare guns are good! including the manmelter! just that the other 3 ARE better. dont believe me? imagine an item server bug where every flare gun, detonator, and scorch shot in everyones inventory became unequippable. people would still get a lot of use out of flares even then! that said, in my opinion, only the scorch shots brokenness can beat out the stock shotguns consistency. with only one damage type you become as inflexible as a stock demoman (good at damage but bad at most everything else), especially vs vaccinator medics and danger shield snipers. and while most pyros agree the scorch shot is OP, even more people hate the vaccinator, which is the real enemy here if you want a bad pyro secondary the reserve shooter is right there. look how they massacred my boy
