I've made three quilts by hand piecing, quite often watching the TV at the same time. Only thing is I use the paper piecing method which I personally find easier.

I’m new to quilting and I love the quiet, relaxing hand piecing rather than machine sewing. I find it so meditative and calming. This is especially after I watched and rewatched your series. Thank you for making this available. Your instructions are very easy to follow and your voice is very calming.

Thank you for your wonderful hand piece video series. I love hand piecing because it’s so soothing to my mind. One question, when you start a piece do you start your needle at the point and then backstitch almost at the same space? I hope my question is clear. Thanks

Thanks for your kind words! Yes, I definitely do a backstitch at the beginning of each stitching line. Here is another video that covers that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqnWhYhojbd7n6Msi=KoBqKGqy0rCbDMVh

I am in love with that Ridges quilt pattern! I think I am going to have to make that! I played pickle ball in high school in PE, about 35 years ago. Funny how it has become so popular now. I am going to try out the Ellery Adams books. They sound like my kind of series.

This video is for hand pieced blocks--where the seam allowance is not sewn down. If you have machine pieced a block, then you need to snip a few threads. You might want to search for a different video if that is the case.

Is there a reason that you do not see the seam allowance?
@kristinesser
@kristinesser Жыл бұрын
It's the traditional way to handpiece. I think there are a few reasons. The first is that it gives you all the possibilities when you press--you can press to whatever side works for you! The other may be that if you stitch the seam allowance down, you would be hand sewing through multiple layers of fabric--which is harder with hand sewing. It feels strange at first, but you can really get nice seam intersections this way!

Great to hear from you! I am glad you are on the mend! I will have surgery in a couple days, so I am planning on doing a lot of cross stitch and reading for the 2 weeks after. I may do a little quilting to if I can manage it :). You have recommended some good books and shows to watch! Interesting to hear the view on Instagram of mothers supplementing their incomes. I get it but as an empty nester myself I find some of the things these young mothers are doing ridiculous. Some of them are creating such high bars and pressure for other young moms out there. I have unfollowed some who just seem unrealistic in their lifestyle and those who post political rants. I just want to look at cross stitch, quilting, gardens and and good food.

I really enjoy your channel, Kristin. Your videos are so relaxing and very meditative. You've got me wanting to return to quilting after a 10-year absence. This time, I'll be doing everything by hand (hand piecing, hand quilting) because I want the experience of doing something that's no mechanical. Hand piecing sounds so therapeutic to me right now. Thank you for your excellent channel.

I just found these, thanks for great video s! Easy to understand. Can't wait to try the harder patterns, this one, out. And thank you for not putting in anNoying-distracting music when you had to finish the blocks. I could see how it was going to look when I did it. The strange thing with the hand sewing, I'm left handed, I did it just like the video and it was so natural. But when I do hand applique I do it opposite the video. Hope to see more.

I haven't quilted in at least 25 years and am getting ready to make a sampler quilt. As I'm watching you trace and cut pieces of fabric, it looks like you're only cutting a single layer of fabric. I don't recall how I did it so many years ago, but was thinking I must have cut more than a single layer of fabric at a time(?). Please know I welcome any help/advice you have to offer : )

When I did this, the center didn’t fan into four separate tiny blocks. Yours looks like it is cut? Other bloggers recommend skipping 2 threads on either side. What in the world does that mean?
@kristinesser
@kristinesser Жыл бұрын
This block is hand pieced, so the seam allowances are not sewn down. So it lays flat very easily. If you machine pieced it, you need to snip a couple threads in the seam allowance so that it opens up. Does that make sense?

What type of thread do you use for hand piecing

It’s personal preference. I like to use 80 wt Aurifil because it’s so thin but still very strong. Regular 50 weight thread works just fine though.

It’s so sad they stopped making that ruler! Any clear quilting ruler will work. I have a 1” x 6” one that works well. I think Olfa and Creative Grids each make one.

I think if you can work it out youtube would be a great addition. At time while you are talking about patterns or projects it's a little difficult to follow what you are seeing. I am a multi project/ crafter and I pretty much cross stitch in the mornings quilt in the afternoons and hand peice in the evenings. Even if I don't all three during a day it's just the things I gravitate towards at certain times of the day, versus only doing one craft a day. Would be interested in one of the patterns in the giveaway.
