I quilt, but I prefer buying by the yard as I make bargellos. Where I buy fabric, they have loads of fat quarters for sale. If it was so horrible to make and sell why do they keep so many in stock?

I use a lot of strips so i like linear cuts - 1/4 yd, 1/2 yd etc. I never buy jelly rolls or layer cakes because I am low income. So glad I bought a lot of fabric when it was so much less expensive than it is today. Now I only buy bits to finish a project.

I Like most all Pre-Cuts ( FQs, Jelly Rolls, 10 inch SQ's, Charm SQ's).There are neat patterns to use for all these Precuts. Then, of course, there are the new Vegas Strips. This opens up a whole new set of way of thinking of what to make.

That was so corny. I had to laugh. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to keep everything organized. Someone will complain, no matter how the products are placed!

Very interesting! Could you guys order fat quarters from the fabric companies, to save you labor and inventory issues? I didn't know that fabric stores would cut custom fat quarters on demand. My favorite 2 precuts are layer cakes and fat quarters.

I buy fat quarters only in novelty fabrics, and I use jelly rolls for pretty much everything else, so I usually cut my own 2.5in strips from backing fabric. All my quilts are donated to Aussie Hero Quilts made to a specific recipient's unique request.

Good idea if you have room for a board ! I have made my own covers in the past. I used canvas with two layers of wool batting underneath.

I am not a quilter, but I do make doll clothes. I like fat quarters because of the specific dimension it is. That 18 x 22 will allow me to make trousers and dresses for a 24-28 in doll without doing weird piecing to make it look right.

I learned something from this - thanks. Also videos live and die based on the drama of their titles, even if the store doesn't really "hate" fat quarters, so I understand. OTOH, if they are an unintentional loss leader with regard to time and effort, maybe you should raise the prices.

There are also uneven sides that have to be trimmed, which wastes fabric that the customers can't use. Fat quarters are frequently overpriced. Yardage is also frequently overpriced. Fat quarter bundles can run into up to $20 a yard, when the yardage is added up. No fabric is worth that much.

I am disabled so I am having trouble getting to my main machine. I bought a mini sewing machine. Nightmare. I think it only takes diddy cotton reels. I can't stop the thread from breaking. I rethreaded many times. I can pull the reel until the needle is threaded. Then it will not budge. What (probably daft) thing am I doing wrong? I am not sure if any other better quality reels will fit a mini machine. HELP!!!!😮

I make a quilt once in a great while. I mostly make clothes and accessories. I like fat quarters because I like scrappy, haphazard quilts, and most of the fat quarters find their way into my clothes and bags as pockets, linings and trims. I have more appreciation for the extra work involved in these precuts.

Well that says alot about your view in what a customer may like. As a scrappy quilter and an Applique artist I would prefer the FQ. Also enjoy them as a quick purchase when the cutting table is backed up. I'll be sure to spend that money at a shop who believes in the customer satisfaction
