UML Weaving - University of Massachusetts Lowell

We participated in a Scholar Co-op at UMass Lowell during the 2012-2013 academic year where we learned to relate mathematics to children's weaving projects. We started by experimenting with different projects that we liked and that we thought might be enjoyable for children of all ages. We then discussed how each of these projects had different patterns and symmetries that related them to math. Our ultimate goal was to come up with a series of projects that we would put into workbook form so that teachers could use it as a learning guide for their students. This turned into creating how-to videos for each of these projects which proved to be much more useful and exciting for people to watch. Nice demonstration of plain weave and 2/1 twill. This twill is the weave structure used in jeans.

Love the plain weave design. Weavers can explore the pattern possibilities with different color sequences in warp and weft. Simple combinatorics: count the number of different patterns you can invent.
