Another one who began the pass when the passing zone was already terminated. As a matter of fact, she (I'm familiar with this driver, as I deliver to the facility she works at) sat back there dinging around with a wide open passing zone opportunity & then decided to pass when I guess she was done with her distraction. She then proceeds to do nearly 80mph in a 55 zone all the way to work, just to sit in the parking lot & play on her phone. She's a serious disaster waiting to happen for absolutely no good reason. I hope she has one for the family members she will impact...if she lives.

The driver of the red car was likely intimidated by the pick-up truck coming up their rear, but still no excuse to pull in front of a big rig without adequate space in case of a need to stop suddenly. If I get a speed demon behind me as I'm passing a semi, I'll signal as I'm passing the front of the semi (which gives a heads up to the speed demon behind me and the semi driver that I intend to change lanes, so the speed demon will wait for the lane change instead of being tempted to race in front of the semi around me), but I will continue in the lane until I'm well ahead of the semi and it's safe to move in front of it. Judging distance from dash cam footage can be difficult, but, judging by time, that car moved over way too quickly after overtaking the semi, which means it was likely way too close to the semi. Keep in mind when trying to judge distance that broken lane lines are 10 to 12 feet long and the space between them is 37 to 40 feet. It appears that red car changed lanes with only 50-60 feet in front of the semi, while reaction distance at lower highway speeds can be over 80 feet, with NORMAL stopping distance hundreds of feet. Give 'em space.

Just remember that, regardless of how illegally these drivers drove, it doesn't justify illegally shining your brights that could dangerously blind them and/or oncoming drivers. It might feel good to do (we've all been there), but it ain't right, and judging them is then kinda hypocritical. ijs

Yeah, I always try to give a bit of extra respect to big rig drivers -- it can't be easy do drive those. I always allow for adequate distance,... and, if they need to change lanes in front of me, I flash my headlamps (I even sometimes preemptively strike when I see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road -- I'll start flashing my headlamps even before the big rig driver signals to move over... just so they don't have to worry, wonder, or wait and can get over ASAP). Safe travels!
@popcorn513027 күн бұрын
May depend on some variables -- you'd have to check the laws in that state. In my state (WI), it would depend on the speed limit and the speed you were going at the time. I know that big rigs don't always accelerate quickly, especially on an incline. Wisconsin State Statute 346.09(3)(b) indicates, "The operator of a vehicle may drive on the left side of the center of a roadway on any portion thereof which has been designated a no-passing zone, as described in par. (a), to overtake and pass, with care, any vehicle, except an implement of husbandry or agricultural commercial motor vehicle, traveling at a speed less than half of the applicable speed limit at the place of passing." Therefore, if you were going at a speed less than the applicable speed limit, that vehicle could legally pass you on the left... even in a no-passing zone. Again, check that state's statutes to verify.
@popcorn513027 күн бұрын
Depends on where the driver STARTED passing (before entering the no-passing zone? or after?). ijs
@outhere869024 күн бұрын
They started passing when the passing zone was already terminated. Not even close on this one. They took an unnecessary & selfish chance where an oncoming vehicle would have been completely disastrous. They will keep taking chances like this until something bad happens. Not acceptable.
@popcorn513027 күн бұрын
You might want to check that state's laws to confirm. In my state (WI), it appears it would be a legal stop. Most people think you have to stop AT the Stop sign. Regarding stopping for a Stop sign: Wisconsin State Statute 346.46 indicates, "(1) [E]very operator of a vehicle approaching an official stop sign at an intersection shall cause such vehicle to stop before entering the intersection [...]. (2) Stops required by sub. (1) shall be made in the following manner: (a) If there is a clearly marked stop line, the operator shall stop the vehicle immediately before crossing such line. (b) If there is no clearly marked stop line, the operator shall stop the vehicle immediately before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. (c) If there is neither a clearly marked stop line nor a marked or unmarked crosswalk at the intersection or if the operator cannot efficiently observe traffic on the intersecting roadway from the stop made at the stop line or crosswalk, the operator shall, before entering the intersection, stop the vehicle at such point as will enable the operator to efficiently observe the traffic on the intersecting roadway." Since I don't see a stop line and there is no crosswalk, per par. (c), a driver only need stop before entering the intersection. Wisconsin State Statute 340.01(25) defines "Intersection" as "the area embraced within the prolongation or connection of the curb lines or, if none, then within the boundary lines of the roadways of 2 or more highways [...]." And Wisconsin State Statute 340.01(54) defines "Roadway" as "that portion of a highway between the regularly established curb lines or that portion which is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, excluding the berm or shoulder." Since "roadway" only includes that portion of a highway designed or ordinarily used for travel (there is no "curb" in this scenario), it would only include that portion of the highway to the left of the white line (commonly referred to as the "fog line") that delineates the driving lane, as drivers are not to drive on the right of that white line: Wisconsin State Statute 346.13 indicates, "Whenever any roadway has been divided into 2 or more clearly indicated lanes [...]: (3) [W]hen lanes have been marked or posted for traffic moving in a particular direction or at designated speeds, the operator of a vehicle shall drive in the lane designated." (Note that, in the phrase "roadway has been divided into 2 or more clearly indicated lanes," " 2 or more lanes" includes lanes in both directions, not just on one side/direction of the roadway, so this would include a 2-lane roadway with one lane in each direction.) Therefore, the driver could pull up to where the white line theoretically would extend across that intersecting road it is approaching on. Note that tar line that goes across that intersecting road about a foot outside of the white line -- it appears that vehicle may have stopped at or slightly past that tar line, but it does not appear to be past where the white line would extend across. Again, you'd have to check that state's statutes to verify. While I sympathize with big rig drivers, as I'm sure dealing with four-wheelers can be frustrating at times, I'm just stating statutory fact. If a semi truck fits and remains within the lane lines, it would clear the front end of that stopped vehicle.
@MrHurricaneFloyd23 күн бұрын
If his vehicle impeded the flow of normal traffic he was indeed in the intersection.
@popcorn513020 күн бұрын
@@MrHurricaneFloyd Errrrrm... it's not up to the decision of the approaching drivers if intersecting vehicles are in the intersection or not. If I saw you stopped back at the Stop sign but decided to stop my vehicle as I approached, deciding that you were just too close for me to proceed, that doesn't arbitrarily mean you are in the intersection. There are statutes that define the parameters of the intersection for a reason. Again, if the semi fit and remained within the lane lines, it would clear the front end of that stopped vehicle, since it's technically not in the intersection. I can sympathize with truck drivers, as it can be difficult to tell if their vehicle will clear a stopped vehicle like that, but, if the semi driver simply looked at the white line and saw that the vehicle was stopped before that white line... and the semi driver realized they were safely on the OTHER side of that white line, they wouldn't have felt the need to be so cautious. The stopped vehicle simply did the semi driver a favor by backing up to make the semi driver feel more comfortable, but the stopped vehicle was not in the intersection.

I'm seeing a number of comments claiming nothing is wrong with the distance. I cannot understand the argument for wanting to be so close in front of a 70mph truck. What would it hurt to have a lead distance of 4 seconds? None of you have seen a single video of what happens in an emergency braking situation when a truck is too close to a car? I'm not sure where you have received such poor driver education (if any at all), but this is an ignorant & dangerous driving habit.
