Jennie, I like the way you formatted this video. I finally got around to reading a poetry collection you talked about in your best of 2023 wrap up: Pistachios in my Pocket. Thanks for putting it on my radar! I have just added Motherfield to my TBR-and I hope to get to it soon.

Have fun playing with your library holds and TBR list! I realized that I was missing out on new books, thinking that I would remember to borrow it when I was ready to read it. The problem is that I would forget. So as soon as I hear about a new book, I place a hold. Depending on the book, it may mean waiting several months but I’m okay with that. I like the surprise of the arrival of a library hold. However, it does sometimes mess with my monthly TBR.

A Very Happy New Year to you and your family. I love the idea of picking a word for the year. This year I have 2 goals. To read Virginia Woolfs' books and her biography, also a new release called "The Manifesto Of Herman Melville" and to read Moby Dick and some of his other stories

Excellent, excellent video. Loved hearing your thoughts. Great books and loved your reasons for going back to these specific books. Love the intensionality you talked about. Everyone changes through the years but the words stay the same. The words can be something we can measure ourself against and realize who we were and who we are now. thank you for making me think so early in the morning. My brain is just waking and it was great to find your video that spoke to me.

I wonder if the whole world didn't hear my slowly exhale after finishing the last page of this magnificent book.... at the beginning I thought it was Ok, but every single page made me care more deeply about each character and by the end, they were in my heart & soul. I loved how Margaret Laurence changed the order of Piques last names. It made me think of Pique trying to find her balance between her heritage from Morag and Jules. The order of her last names was the wave she rode back and forth figuring herself out. I'm only so sorry that I won't be able to be in the discussion tomorrow, my son has activities that I'm on driving duty for. Please do keep me in mind for the future reads, I would love to read more by Margaret Laurence. Thank you also, especially for making the videos.

My only wish is that in your last video you'd warned us to strap on our seat belts... what a ride..... I'm so glad you said that you disliked Brooke... from the moment he was introduced I felt his need to be in control and "take care" of Morag. Every moment in this section when Morag stood up for herself I cheered a little louder, even if it just meant her having small realizations about herself, her own talents and abilities to stand up & show up for herself. In this section my favorite line was when Morag goes home to visit Prin before her death and she's talking to Christie, thinking about people of the past and says "They are all here tonight. Who has been real and who imagined ? All have been both it seems"
@JennieJohnston

Yes, that is a great line. Thanks for sharing it Karen.

You speak so beautifully about this story, I'm not at all surprised at why you love it so much.... My favorite thing about it, is how it's written, with the memorybank movies and current time line. Margaret Laurence perfectly captures the conflict of being a young girl - teenager in Morag , and her writing is stunning, poetic, even though she doesn't use big fancy words which to me, is the mark of a brilliant writer. I'm so happy to watch and read along. Thanks so much for putting this together!!! Oh, I am also in awe of how she describes memory, and how there really is no version of the absolute truth, you touched on it, bringing our own unique experiences and understanding to what's happened and it changes over time with our added experiences and understanding of events.
@JennieJohnston
@JennieJohnston 5 ай бұрын
@@karenwetherald6086 that’s very well out thought out Karen, regarding memory changing as our perspectives do. I agree that Laurence’s writing is beautiful but not pretentious or inaccessible. 💕
