Obnoxious New York habit of beginning the applause while the final bars of music are being played. Awful.

So few views, thank you for uploading. There is much to admire in this piece which was not well received at the time, given what was regarded as its gloomy tone. This performance is a delight.

It's thrilling to know that this live performance occurred and, better still, a recording exists for those of us who either were unable to attend or simply did not yet know of Dame Baker's voice. Thank you, starrman22, for posting. You're going to get a blessing for it. :D

This is one of my favorite operas, and this recording is a perfect example of why. The clarity and beauty of the sound, as well as the emotion behind it, are out of this world.

I too remember Janet's voice from the 60s onwards. I heard her live many times, and also took part in a singing master class with Paul Hamburger. Janet's voice and artistry are so striking in this recital. Thank you ❤

Not as far as I know, however a two-LP set did appear from Historical Recording Enterprises HRE 412-2 (S) (1983); I have not been able to discover the contents of this set.

As a singing student I have periods where the love for singing seems to disappear but then I come here and listen to this and cry like a baby and in some way this always unlocks my heart and makes it open to love singing and make music again. I will always come here when I forget my love for music.

I have yet to hear a Grob-Prandl performance that doesn't astonish me with its cleanliness, ease, and directness. There is no performance I have ever heard that exceeds, and probably equals, this one. How I would have loved to hear her live!

The singing is amazing, however suitner's tempo is a bit too fast. Otherwise everything (except for the quality of the recording of course) is great. A great chance to hear knie's Walküre brünnhild' too such a shame her Walküre with sotin and boulez from chereau's production isn't available though...

Ella's voice and energy were beginning to fade at this point in her career - noticeably on her studio recordings - but she's in really fine form here and is giving 110%. Nice to hear the audience returning the love so enthusiastically as well.

Interesting that the opera that night was supposed to be Martha. I’m not sure why they switched to Tosca, but Martha has never been seen at the MET again since the 2/3/68 performance right before this one. Amazing how some operas completely fade from the repertoire. We are lucky this Tosca happened, and that some clever person backstage recorded it.

I listen to you everyday, 3 to 4 hours or more. Thankfully many of your recordings are generously on the net. Your sharing of your songs all over the world is a legacy that can’t be matched for which I am so thankful. You gave of yourself so totally to the world and I thank you for that a million million times.❤️❤️❤️🌸🌺

I agree. While Montserrat Caballé is by some distance the best thing about the set, if it were remastered and the obvious edits tidied up, we would at least have this most exquisite Butterfly available for comparison with the other greats.

Yes. How we don’t have one of the most iconic roles in all of opera interpreted by one of its greatest singers readily available on CD or digital is outrageous

I was lucky enough to attend one of the 3 January 1977 performances. I believe it was the 1st in the series. Rysanek was sublime - even more expansive in the "Vater, bist Du's" than here. I have rarely heard an audience so quiet as her voice floated out = there is almost no accompaniment at the beginning and she was absolutely magical. Kastu is over-parted to put it mildly. Berry is well-nigh definitive as Barak. A wonderful actor and a rock solid vocal technique. Nilsson was very clever to save this role for near the end of her career. No one expects beauty of tone in the long stretches of complaining and angry outbursts. Yet she still had the ability to convey a tender side in Act 3. The top notes are massive, if a bit straight toned, unlike the kaleidoscopic B's and C's of her prime. Böhm is in full command. I wonder what he felt about all the cuts that have become standard? Back to the performance, I remember being surprised that the house wasn't sold out, with that cast. A fellow standee told me FRAU wasn't actually that popular in Vienna! Except for 2 performances in 1964 - the Karajan new production (2 performances!!) - it hadn't been heard in Vienna since 1959. Astonishing that it wasn't packed to the ceiling!

I adore her voice, her singing, all of it. Such a special treasure. But, I think of the face of my five-year-old niece. I think of my mother and me when I was six. How a human soul can leave a child I will never understand. It is not OK. My brain and heart are a muddle right now.

Santunione was truly a mesmerizing and magnificently endowed spinto to drammatico soprano! Even in fierce roles: today she would be the number one reigning soprano! And the voice was very large and masterfully projected (listen to her live rendition of Santuzza at Verona!) RIP Magnifica!
