Absolutely, I played for 25 years before finding Troy and guys like Ben Eller. No doubt, those guys have lifted my playing to a whole new level, and I never imagined in a million years that I would be able to successfully play Steve Morse licks, with precision. Many thanks to Troy, for his amazing guidance, because of him, I am finally doing it. Next, I never realised how variable picking techniques can be. Plus, Troy also introduced myself and others to many awesome players that I had never heard of previously. Such as Andy Wood, Martin Miller, Carl Miner etc. KZbin is such an awesome tool for us wannabe but maybe could be, Guitar Masters in training. Congrats to your playing on this video, it sounded nice , and was very clean and articulate.

Troy (Like myself) are primarily Downward pickslanters. As are YJM, Eric Johnson, Satriani, Nuno etc... so when he said that, he was figuring out what Malmsteen does, and in order to do it "exactly" like Malmsteen, you would need to be a downward slanted picker. That doesn't mean you "can't" play Malmsteen with an upward slant....it just means that you will need to modify the notes/hammer on/pull offs to match your preferred picking style. :) Cheers!

Or to start every lick with an upstroke.

Actually, watching your hand, you are an upward pick slanter, and you prefer to change strings after a downstroke. The extra note you added reverses every single pickstroke afterwards and allows you to do the rest of the line easier for your picking style. Malmsteen actually finishes that style of line on an upstroke, but I can see that you finish on a downstroke. It makes perfect sense to me that adding that note would make it easier for you. :) btw.....great playing.

you are picking upward but your pick is slanted down, so this is considered upward pick-slanting?
@almcmanus7483

Chris Choir I believe that it’s the top of the pick that determines up or down. So I think what I’m demonstrating here would qualify as upward? Hell, I don’t know. Haha
@vonmilash823

a pick slant is determined entirely by the path the pick travels. it has nothing to do with pick angle. a neutral slant is 0 degrees, the x axis. if the pick travels into anything in the y axis (away from the guitar), it has a slant. if it travels into y axis space on the downstroke, it is upwards slanting.

amazing how fast you can execute this. The upward pickslant feels so hard to execute for me - practice it for a long time. Is there a trick about it?
@almcmanus7483
@almcmanus7483 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks! No trick, I don't even remember learning it or trying to do it. I will say that the first time I ever picked up a guitar I just played as fast as I could all the time, even if it sounded horrible...I think that's what helped me later when I was trying to be accurate.

Troy's already talked extensively about upward pickslanting; Batio and Paul Gilbert are both natural upward pickslanters.
@almcmanus7483
@almcmanus7483 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed. But unless you use an odd number of notes (or start with an upstroke?) it won't line up. I'm sure he's talked about that, too! He's the wizard. hahaha..
