When I was about six, having recently moved to a new country where I didn't speak the language, I caught a few minutes on TV of a cartoon. It was very different from anything I'd seen before, even if I didn't understand the words, and kind of stayed with me. It's only now, all those decades later, that I realize it was the before-last episode of Future Boy Conan.

Didn't know Hayao Miyazaki worked on that Lupin III movie. Also, for an anime movie that came out in 1979, it looks a TV anime from the 80s.

I have to admit this video felt bogged-down with the play-by-play movie recap. I'm not sure I really understand how this makes Lupin an anti-hero, or the broader meaning of that thesis, but I quite like your voice and chill presentation style.

I don't see how you can list Michael Corleone among the anti-heroes. He is a mob boss, and not at all a hero. He might see himself as protector of his family and loyal friends and followers, but only as the "king." He might have been a true hero during the war, but in the context of the movies, as he falls into the mafia life, he never helps anyone without any sense of obligation.

There's a difference between a likeable villain and anti-hero. A villain is a villain, some with more flair than others. An anti-hero is someone who does terrible things, but often for the right reasons. Lupin III is a world class thief but he saves a princess. Captain Jack Sparrow is a pirate, but he saves his friends lives. Ghost Rider sold his soul to the devil to cure his father's cancer. Deadpool is an assassin, but he often helps people and breaks the fourth wall doing it!

Miyazaki just thrown away the entire character sheet of Lupin and used one of his already existing characters for his role. Don't get it wrong, I like the man and his style and *the Castle of Cagliostro* is my favorite Lupin Movie. But he didn't "enhanced" the character in some way, working with the source material, he just wrote a "fan fiction". I wish the characters of Lupin were always like this (and become like this, after the movie), but they are nothing alike, so, in conclusion: this is a beautiful story, but it has to be taken as a Marvel "What IF... Lupin was the opposite of what Monkey Punch created".

You could argue he did the same when he worked on the first lupin anime which predates the castle of cagliostro. He took that Lupin and slowly made him a more softer person

@@dannyboidee Yes, also that. I just toke this one as example, because it was the topic of the video. You're right. Even if here he literally had no restrictions, he already started to shape him as he liked the most.

1:42 Woah! I just realized something! When I was a kid in Nigeria, I remember an episode of Samurai Jack (Jack and the labyrinth) where he met a thief character that looked a lot like Lupin's friend. I didn't get the reference since I had never seen anime at that point and only got into anime in 2021, but it's only now that I just realized the reference😲😲

One of my favorite things about Lupin is that he’s a great example of a lead character who seems to be full of himself, overly cocky, and never really changes that much in the end. Most TV shows or movies would have the main character confront these flaws or have them be the comic relief. But it’s part of what makes him so cool and memorable. We recognize these flaws in ourselves at times, but like that there’s a character that not only learns to live with them but often uses it to his advantage, helping drive him closer to his goals. But at the same time, there are several episodes and movies have little character moments for Lupin that do show some heart and urgency. Showing that there is a part of him that can get out of his own head and legit cares.

ive seen lupin around for SO long and i just never gave it a chance. very very rarely over the years did i consider it and that was just because of a few popular snippets or fanart. this video broke down the movie well with a lot of intrigue left. youve sold me on watching this and maybe the anime too. great job!

I enjoyed the video and even found some of the info new to me and you did inspire me to do a lot of research and thinking, so props to you. However, i did have a lot of problems with the video, so lets go through them all, starting with the premise. Did Miyazaki redefine Lupin? Maybe. As the video mentions(although quickly skims past it) Miyazaki was a codirector of a lot of the episodes of the first series(7, 8, 10, 11, 13-23) and if you look at episode 11 in particular it has a lot of similarities with castle of cagliostro. Mainly an innocent girl kept captive and lupin risking his life to save her. So its possible that compared to the manga its more lighthearted(haven't read it yet), but it also means these hero traits and hopeful atmosphere already existed before the movie. I need a lot more convincing to agree with the premise. This brings me to my next problem with the video. You dont really do much to show how miyazaki changed the character of lupin, specificly with comparisons to how he used to be. Maybe instead of summarizing the movie(which did not add anything to your points), you should have focused on the initial premise of the video. 3:00-8:16 for those that havent seen the movie and want to skip the summary. And speaking of lacking focus. You mention a lot of information, but a lot of it has nothing to do with the initial point. And speaking of initial points, the title of the video should probably be called "How Miyazaki redefined Lupin", cuz he isn't really redefining the concept of the anti-hero. When you mention Conan, you should specify future boy conan. I genuinely thought you meant detective conan and was really confused with the comparisons. In summary, you are kind of all over the place. You should clearly introduce your points at the start and then give information that's relevant. Now on to some of the more technical issues. You should lower or not use the music while speaking. And i did notice some weird changes in the sound when you were talking. Like if you jump from 2:00 to 2:20, it sounds a lot different. I assume you did different audio cuts and quality changed between them, which can be jarring if noticed. Though your video editing overall is pretty good. Anyways, i think that's all i wanted to say. Hope ya continue making videos and dont find this comment discouraging.

It turned out that our company did the subtitling for Lupin IIIrd Castle of Cagliostro. I don't think I was the translator, but I was the technician when we timed the subtitles to the program. This may have been the first time I've ever heard of Hayao Miyazaki. I didn't know how to read his given name since he uses an unusual kanji. 駿 is normally read "Shun," but 駿馬 means a fast horse so that's why it's read "Hayao."

I wanna know how Miyazaki redefined the anti-hero
@dannyboidee
@dannyboidee 3 ай бұрын
Before Cagliostro, Lupin was a sleezy, terrible person that was more close to a villain then a hero, literally being the pinnacle of a pos anti-hero. Miyazaki's Lupin turned him into a more soft and courageous anti hero that was more hero than villain. While Miyazaki didn't exactly redefine the anti-hero, he did redefine Lupin himself. Without miyazaki's Lupin, lupin the third would probably fade into obscurity.
