Looked like a wasteland to me. The energy that area has created will result in its ultimate demise. They put the gun to their head, cocked the hammer, and waiting on the trigger to be pulled. It’s a ghost town in the making as the energy plays out and the water dries up. In another 100 years it’ll be just another western story on a roadside plaque.

Offsetting our own emissions really does almost nothing the global picture. We cut emissions from increased prices and decreased production here and it just moves elsewhere. If we really wanted to contribute we should ramp up nuclear and start exporting carbon neutral synthetic fuels. Work on making energy and fuels from nuclear so cheap that every other country will have no choice but to adopt a similar model in order to stay competitive.
@C.J.Gerwin
@C.J.Gerwin 6 жыл бұрын
The issue with 'switching to renewables' is you need a backup energy source that can ramp up and ramp down its power output to follow with the variability of wind and solar generation. The backup is no small portion either, capacity factors for wind and solar are around 20%, therefore you need up to 80% backup energy to stabilize the output of the plant. Energy storage options are pretty limited and are way more expensive than a backup natural gas plant. So right now any expansion of renewables is coupled with expansion of backup natural gas plants. Its a step in the right direction but not a good plan for deep decarbonization. That is why I am very excited that next generation nuclear reactors have the ability to provide a very flexible energy output, and can be coupled with renewable expansion. Molten salt reactors in particular seem to have quite good flexibility, the company that I am following that seems to be leading this development is Terrestrial Energy based out of Canada.

I've talk to some oil sands people and the majority of their carbon emissions come from the heat required for oil refinement and bitumen extraction, these processes run on 600 C steam and they are burning lots of natural gas to generate those high temperatures. At the same time a bunch of people in the nuclear industry are looking at producing small modular reactors that can output similar temperatures (reactor that are built on a factory line and shipped to the site, ranging from 5MW to 500MW). The only way to oil and gas industry can continue it's operations and comply with the 1 Megaton cap on carbon emissions is if they switch their heat input from natural gas to nuclear. The switch seems like the logical choice because there is no way the oil and gas industry is simply going to shut down all operations, and they will start to face some serious cost increases the longer they emit carbon. I really hope the media could talk about this more publicly because this seems to be a very well kept secret and the nuclear industry in Canada needs a lot more young engineers to drive this revolution. This seems like the perfect discussion topic for the Rational Middle

Great video but there is a ton of innovation in the advanced nuclear industry happening right now in Canada. Canada is ramping up to become the world leader in small modular reactors as well as Terrestrial Energy, a Canadian start up, is leading the development in molten salt reactors. The potential of these technologies are HUGE, and if you are looking for a silver bullet for deep decarbonization, advanced nuclear is your best bet. (They will also provide backup to renewable technologies)

From what fantasy world are the people in this video pontificating? The E.P.A is being destroyed. As the linked article below states: "Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has told oil and gas industry leaders that the agency will reconsider its methane emissions rule following a petition from industry leaders, a move decried by environmentalists." www.cnn.com/2017/04/19/politics/environmental-protection-agency-methane/index.html 130,000 oil and gas wells have been drilled since 2010: www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/united-states-of-oil/ There are over one million active wells in the U.S., with many companies involved in drilling and extraction. Data about what's happening is very inadequate. www.fractracker.org/2015/08/1-7-million-wells/ The next frontier will be federal lands. As the video acknowledges, the problem of fugitive methane has *not* yet been addressed. Means of prevention are costly, and there is now little incentive (other than that of profit) for companies to spend for such. Obviously the industry wants to eliminate mandates. The Environmental Defense Fund has done good work, but unfortunately in the process it has become a shill for the gas industry.

These interviews were conducted prior to Trump's election. The video admits as much about how much is unknown about the realities of the problem. States like Colorado are leading the way in passing their own emissions standard. That's why it's important to have the discussion. So far, the EPA rules on green completion are still in place. How this moves forward is of much debate and that's why it's important to have the conversation. Relying on economic motivations and state-driven solutions will be important.

She's right about the process,the boil is driving off the diacetyls and other unwanted chemicals. Excess boiling can drive off some of the flavor volatile oils. Check out John Palmer's book "How To Brew."

I think she and cordell are both right. Compressing something very complex into a soundbite is rough. Lacking knowledge of brewing, video editors may not help much. What she says isn't wrong, but it's an awkward half-truth. No, we do not boil off flavors. But we can boil off certain substances that might otherwise affect flavor, and as cordell points out, by boiling also extract substances from hops into the wort that affect flavor.

Again, there is no discussion of our current global climate situation. Even as regards the drilling process, however, much is not mentioned here. There are close to 600,000 gas wells in the U.S., according to the Energy Information Administration. There are tens of thousands of drilling companies. Effective measures to protect the public are not in effect, nor is that likely to be happening nationwide anytime soon. Here's more information on the whole subject: www.alternet.org/environment/8-dangerous-side-effects-fracking-industry-doesnt-want-you-hear-about serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health/case_studies/hydrofracking_w.html www.fractracker.org/2015/08/1-7-million-wells/

Inevitably, a video titled "Realities of Drilling" will be viewed by quite a few people in isolation, with the presumption being that it's a thorough treatment of the subject. If that's not so, then the associated notes should make mention of what supplemental viewing is necessary to get a complete picture. Certainly climate implications cannot be left out of such a discussion..
