Anna K You count from right to left because the right of the word has the last syllable (and should have the stress for words that don’t end in a vowel, n, or s) and the second to the last syllable (which has the stress for words that end in vowel, n, or s). The basic oral stress rules are all about the last and second to last syllable so it makes sense to count in that direction. The basic accent video I made might be helpful for you. If you went straight to this one it might be harder to figure out what I am talking about.
