wow, absolutely fascinating! i could listen to these guys for hours. i would love to have a manual for each r-type car in the current fleet, with pictures, exploded view diagrams and all the rest of it. heck, give me that manual for all the retired cars as well! there needs to be a subway bar in new york where people can go, have a few drinks, and just talk overhaul shop.

What a great roundtable discussion/webinar, thank you NYTM for hosting! What a shame that Governor Hochul "indefinitely paused" literally weeks before its start :-( hoping that a positive announcement comes out after November 5th, 2024 and that when the congestion pricing implementation hopefully gets "unpaused," it's not completely made into Swiss cheese with even more exemptions and giveaways :-/

Can't wait to watch this through in one sitting. Humanity's squandering of the one shot gift of the carbon pulse manifests in countless ways, but seemingly the devotion to cars and suburbia have done and will do the most damage. Is it reversible before the point of no return?

It's shocking how badly transit services have corroded in the US. When the federal covid funding of transit runs out I think a lot of cities might see their transit virtually or actually disappear!

It is one thing when the "arts" is subsidized by big foundations or private benefactors, o actually seeling their art to an end buyer. But what I find hard to believe is that Gov'ts al all level: Federal, State County. City or +++, seem so freely to create levels of admin for any reason to fund these exhibitions. Again may I point the WPA of 30's Depression era. wahsovevr agaion burdenong aql;l the tax payers who will never see any value at all. Here we are not showing National Anything; it is all foreign Culture absconded by anyone wishing to use/exploit tehir true interest and draw on 'roots' as a connection of authority. I think often so pretentious. That like Lincols's son to be a relioca of Lincoln or know and act in any same manner or skill. Like just haveing a name is enough to speak for a 1000 years of unknown facts or skills. Where is the funding $$$ who gets the hurdles as she says, so many declarations of disadvantaged whereas they do get to travell. they do get time and money. I want to see behind the bureacratic curtain. I can go on but the leagcy does not prove that it is money fairly spent (by people who have no say and others sign checks with no consesus rights. Object lessons that seem to be justified without extended proof. Being capable of Art and Having years and experience and degrees does only allow opinion and hope.

The story of the painfully long adoption AND dismissal of the the numbers and letters (and colors) in train car roll signs is a topic to be considered for a future presentation. A complex web of events and limitations unfolding over decades. For example, the only old cars receiving color front and side signs to replace the original factory installed signs were the R-16s in the mid 70s when they had a mini0iverhaul to address door operator and other issues. I will note that the TA abandoned the BMT route numbers in 1961 and the R-27s were delivered with letter roll signs. The BMT letters were added to the IND letters in the route guide on the back of the pocket map as of early 60s. The 1978 introduction of the new map and colors was accompanied by a public relations campaign titled "We're Changing". There was a drawing of a worker on a ladder over-laying a dark 4 over a light 4 (or some route). I have a button that simply says in soft italics We're Changing with a background of rainbow stripes (colors bleeding into each other - unlike the later pride flag). As I recall the stations and train cars (those not facing imminent retirement or overhaul) were largely but not completely converted by 80 or 81. If anything the cars with old (1967 map) colors were updated much more quickly than the cars with non-color (pre 1967 rollsigns). The wisdom of the participants in the development of the current map is evident in its long standing survival. Everything, down to the choice of colors and the refinement of secondary information, was done quite effectively. New maps will come and go but I firmly believe the existing trunk colors will be in use as long as the system is a functioning entity,

@trainluvr Hi, thanks for this information. The photograph of the 1979 poster you mention is held by the Transit Museum Archives, and is reproduced in Paul Shaw's magisterial book on subway signage. But I don't believe I've ever seen the button you mention. I'd love to get a photo or scan if it.

Thank you for putting this together and preserving this history. The original IND station guide had separate colors and a schematic design. The Board of Transportation / Transit Auth. well understood the deficiencies in what we now call wayfinding. The very slow progress from 1940 to 1967 illustrated the grave problems of financial disinvestment. Wayfinding was a low priority as well as a very expensive one to correct since signage needed to be updated and in a way that would not require wasteful revision. At least they got it right in the late 60s and again in the 70s with the systems we still use today. Also the durable station maps were rarely photographed. In a lifetime of interest in this subject I don't recall ever seeing a single photo or mention of the early wall map program.

"The original IND station guide had separate colors and a schematic design." I think you are referring to the 1938 glass map. This was not really the 'original' but the culmination of Arthur Weindorf's development of the IND map from 1932. There is more about that important map in my other presentation, "Coloring the subway map".

I was delighted to find a few photographs that happen to include the 1947 Hagstrom wall map in situ. There is also contemporary documentation, and quite a few original specimens of that map have come up on eBay. But the information I have found on station wall maps *before* 1947 is very scant indeed. Two mentions of wall maps at IRT stations (one contemporary, in 1918; and one by Hugh Dunne at the 1978 debate), but no photographs. No contemporary photographs or documentation of BMT or IND wall maps. I have come across one specimen of an enamel BMT map (still in owner's possession in Hagerstown), and one specimen of a framed IND map (donated to the Transit Museum). So it seems that all three railroads did have wall maps, but it's frankly incredible that there is no known contemporary photograph of them in situ!

Corrections: (a) From 18:51 to 19:10, I incorrectly labelled the 1939 Nostrand map as "1937". The correct date (i.e. 1939) is displayed on the next slide. This is important as Nostrand was still using 2-color offset lithography up to and including 1937, while Hagstrom had already moved on to the 4-color offset litho press in 1936. Nostrand did not catch up until 1939. (b) At 24:48 to 25:02, I tagged Emmanuel Scheyer as "designer and architect". In fact, he was not an architect: he was first employed as a Design Engineer and later as Civil Engineer. He also designed and invented things in his own time.

I love when they had the Baby blue 🔵 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line. The Thrid Avenue Elevated line should of never been talking down it should of been left alone. Millions and millions of people were protesting that they did not want this Thrid Avenue Elevated line to come down. Apparently they had torn down the Thrid Avenue Elevated line down. Alots of people are still suffering without the Third Ave Elevated line. They had the BX 55 buses replacing the Thrid Avenue Elevated line. Few years later they have the BX 15 BX 41 BX 19 buses running like crazy. The Thrid Avenue Elevated line helped out the 2 5 4 6 lines with out over Crowding. That was a waste of money tairing down the Thrid Avenue Elevated line wich was important line that took people from point A to point B.

A nice addition to the conversation that really would have been great would be the fear a lot of people feel when encountering this sort of art/activism anywhere. (Listening to the speakers here you would look forward to seeing their next installment :) I grew up in the inner city and graffiti/art on someone else's property usually screams poor policing and potential no go zone. These issues are in the activists head at the moment and very important to them. Most people are trying to get to work and in the process seeing antisocial behavior as part of their art.
