What all did you change? What mileage was yours and when you changed and how is the car doing now? Thanks for sharing. I'll try to document more when I get around to swapping the head gasket and we'll see what other parts since I grabbed the timing cover and internals with the complete head assembly from a 150K donor 2011 parts car at the yard. Mine's at ~285K miles and I think ready for the head gasket change. Hopefully the block and rods are all good so I don't need to replace that or honing is enough if there is some scoring and I have to do the pistons and rings.

To set timing chain, the exhaust sprocket, one nearest the fire wall, you will find a rectangle punched into the sprocket if it still original there will be a little blue spray paint found there. That mark is lined up with the chain. The intake sprocket, side closest to the radiator, you will find there are two groves, choose the grove to align with that has a dot on the face. Of course line the lowest part of the chain lines up with the dot on the crank sprocket gear. Important: Once all marks are lined up place the rear timing chain guide in place and wire it up to the upper timing chain on top so that the rear timing chain guide has tension on it so keep the timing chain from jumping a tooth when placing the timing chain cover in place. It has a tendency to jump a tooth on the lower crank sprocket if this is not done. Recheck your marks before bolting on the timing cover. Once cover is bolted on..then remove the wire you put in place earlier. Load the tensioner and insert and bolt it in place. Turn engine counter clock wise till you hear a click. Check by poking a screw driver against the rear of timing chain to see if slop in timing chain is gone. Have a good day!

Are you concerned with RTV squishing into the engine and clogging up crankshaft journals and such. I've seen engines destroyed before from overuse of our rtv. The oil filter should screen it out. But if one of those little passage ways to say a crankshaft journal or camshaft Journal gets blocked that will cause premature wear and engine failure. I myself have a 236,000 miles online in my head gasket starting to go bad. I took the O-ring off the coolant reservoir which is relieving the pressure on the system and making a big difference on the knock-on start. I maybe I'll drive the car for quite a while like this but cool it cool it will boil if I drive it hard. It runs about 195 to 205 on the scan gauge and antifreeze water mix shouldn't boil until about 2:35 degrees. I'm guessing though unpressurized the water around the cylinders will boil even when the rest of the system it's not that warm creating pockets of air and bubbles in the system. My heat still working and everything's fine but I noticed some cool it might push out of the cap if I run it hard on the highway like flooring it. Course it's still cool weather I don't know if they can handle summertime Heat. I've also heard someone say that you could try to re snug the head bolts down to get some more life out of it but it looks like if the cam caps and camshaft have to come off anyway you might as well just replace the cover the gasket at that point. Doesn't look like too bad a job though just time consuming

Just to confirm, this is the correct orientation of colored links and marks. Adam's video of last January is showing the wrong orientation potentially allowing valves to hit piston (double link aligned with right mark on right cam). Adam, thank you for all your documentation of this process. I successfully replaced the head gasket on my 2010 Prius, thanks in no small part to your videos.

Jim does the chain marks matter when taking of the chain. Or does it matter most when putting it back? I've rotated this thing a number of times and still can't get the 2orange marks to line up on the intake side neither the single orange on the exhaust
@ecojim15 жыл бұрын
@@burg2daworld - I assume you mean "taking off the chain." I was lucky in that when I took off the timing chain cover the marks and links were very close to this alignment. Regardless, when reinstalling the chain all three points have to be in line to assure the correct relative orientation of the crank-, intake cam- and exhaust camshafts. That includes the single colored chain link on the dot on the crankshaft gear, the single colored link on the little rectangle on the exhaust camshaft and in between the two colored links on the left (when viewed from above) line on the intake cam (toward the front of the car or right side if the engine is removed and on a stand). I was having a hard time figuring this out. It helped when I realized that it takes several revolutions (probably 4 because of it being a 4 stroke engine) of the crankshaft to return all three to the correct orientation. (Obviously, rotating the crankshaft is only easy when the spark plugs are removed and it's a little difficult to keep enough tension on the chain during the process without the tension piston installed) This might be a little goofy, but to logically think this through, I took a short piece of a metal clothes hanger and cut it to about a foot long straight section and inserted it carefully through the spark plug hole to gently rest on the top of the piston (#1, closest to timing chain). As I rotated the crankshaft, this allowed me to see the relative position of the piston. That helped me confirm that the orientation of the three marks was correct. (cam lobe pushes intake valves open/down as piston goes down, both are closed as gas is compressed as the piston goes up, both remain closed as piston goes back down for ignition stage, then exhaust valve opens as piston goes back up pushing out the exhaust gas, then repeat). Standard disclaimer that I am not a professional and can not be held responsible for any damage caused to your car by this admittedly amateur approach. It worked for me. My prius seems to run fine now, though it "feels" like it idles at a slightly higher RPM for some reason. No codes or warning lights are visible. I am about to take it for emissions testing. I've had to drive it for a while to go through a "Drive Cycle." It would not complete the emissions protocol until then.

Hi Adam, I am wondering what tool did you use to rotate the camshaft. I removed the side cover so I can see the chain marks.
@TimZ0073 жыл бұрын
I'm at 236 I think I'm starting to get a head gasket failure on mine. If you take the pressure out of the cooling system you won't get barely any misfire for a while. But you may boil coolant much easier in warmer weather. Anyway the consensus seems to be Prius is or any hybrid car would start and stop a lot the heat Cycles the engine goes through our many more times compared to a regular engine where it started and stopped less frequently. The aluminum between the head in the block expands and contracts wearing the head gasket out. It's like saying you have a million heat cycles per engine until the head gasket starts to fail. You're going to reach that level quicker with a Prius than other cars. Now depending on how you drive it if you're driving in the gas engines running most of the time the Cycles are going to be similar to a regular engine. They do still seem to be very reliable and head gasket is just barely Letting Go usually. But if you continue to drive the car if the cylinder one which is usually the problem cylinder fills up with coolant the starter motor which is the hybrid Drive motor is so strong it will push that engine bending rod and blowing a hole out the side of your block at some point if you get enough Cooling in there. So really the head gasket should be done ASAP if you're getting a constant misfire. I more or less getting a light misfire on my car I took the O-ring out of the coolant reservoir cap now the systems not holding pressure and cold starts are smooth again. But I'm sure it will only get worse I'm probably just going to spend the $50 into the head gasket. I've already got the EGR three times since I've had the car it's just a little bit farther to go to do the head gasket. I don't think it's too many problems with warp heads or blocks it just the amount of heat Cycles these cars take is wearing out the gaskets.
