Am I the only player who doesn't normally use archetypes? I just throw in random cards into the deck.

As a new player especially, I hated playing The Negate Game, where the goal of interaction was to completely stop your opponent from making moves. I picked up on the fact that it was necessary, I learned that with modern decks they likely still had plays to make after the first two negates, but even then, it just doesn’t feel good. I don’t really want to stop other people’s plays. I want to be able to roll with the punches and live through the activation of their trap card, or at least see their favorite boss monster hit the field, so undercutting those actions felt bad. But evidently, players have grown so used to these cards that instantly win games if allowed to play out, that it hardly matters to them. I knew that better than anyone with my custom insect-plant deck with no archetype engine. My opponents would negate the most useless of effects, not because it really got them anything, but because they had been trained to shut down anything they didn’t understand. It was kind of frustrating, from my perspective, that the game had reached this level of power-scaling arms race to where nothing can be held back without fear of somehow losing the win. Where the ideal is to make all the moves before your opponent can, with the expectation that they want to win the same way. I actively refused to make better decks for a long time. After a year and a half of Master Duel, I finally gained enough interest in an actual archetype (Solfachord) to make plays with negates involved. I still don’t use hand traps and I still don’t have a super effective means of subduing the opponent, but the mechanic is built into my cards now which is new. We’ll see where deckbuilding continue to take me, I guess.

I'm glad you've found another deck you're enjoying, and if you wanna mess with the plant/insect idea more, look to Ragnaraika! As to the mindset of everything being negated, the removal of generic omninegates for the most part has helped a bit, but this game is very much defined under the mindset of "execute your own gameplan, deny your opponents". I find handtraps a necessary evil, but understand a desire to play without them!

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a shit game, and the sad part about it is that it can be so much better. Yu-Gi-Oh is a an amalgamation of horrible lack of rules and constant breaks of their own rules, like how you needed a guy to take a deck consisting of 2k cards for Konami to realize that you need to have a deck size limit in the first place. Then not limiting special summons lead to hand traps on the excuse of "interaction" just to stop, or at least try to stop turns that last around 15 fucking minutes of someone sucking his own dick while he keeps summoning cards, which keeps pilling on itself until you have decks that consist on 20+ handtraps with just a few 1 card combo shit, which is another problem on it's own, like tenpai. The longer this stupid game goes on, the worst it gets, be it by a new summon mechanic that completely turns the game upside down for better or worst, usually worst, to konami competing with himself to see how far they can take printing unfair decks to force players to buy them without making them leave the game, on top of the aforementioned problem with rules and handtraps. The fact that you need to tell someone to add a broken engine to his deck to even have fun with this shit game is a problem on it's own, because it's not that fun deck anymore, it's just whatever shit broken engine you want to play that will win you the game. At this point nobody should play this shit game anymore, but people will keep playing it on a combination of mindless nostalgia and sunk cost fallacy on account of spending hundreds of dollars on fucking cardboard. Fuck YGO, but not because of itself, but because Konami decides to keep making it worse.

Honestly, this is why I can't get into competitive games. This shit gets over optimized to hell and its not even a game anymore. In a healthy landscape, you should not have crazy starters out of half your cards. Decks should play as intended rather than all having near identical end boards. Your deck should have a chance to brick, chance should always be a factor. Casually, yugioh is a super fun game, but get it competitive and there's nothing left to play

Every time I so much as hear ash blossom I’m reminded how unfriendly yugioh is the casuals…it was the first card to show me exactly how unfair it is to new comets. I caved in and eventually I entered this cycle- Get’s stomped by ten negate boards over and over. Quits. Eventually comes back out of curiosity when some new support comes out. Quits again (Usually rage quitting and flocking back to mtg.) Bitterly thinks about how I wasted a good few months of my life with this game. Comes back after a good two years hoping maybe just maybe things are better. Rinse and repeat…

@@cannonballkuriboh zexal is definitely a fun XYZ, several starter usually revolving one of the ZS cards like ZS Ascended sage, ZS Armed Sage or astraltopia to search zexal construct to search out armed sage since he can special summon himself from had if the only monster you control is 1 level 4 monster. Usually short and sweet combos going through utopia double and that end on One of the Rays, depending on what utilities you need, 39: Utopia the original with attack negates, c39: Ray Victory which prevents spell and trap activation during the damage step and can negate the effect of a face up monsters for a turn, ultimate draconic ray which can equip a ZW from hand or deck any time it's targeted with an effect and can negate the the effects of face up effects equal to the number of zw equiped. The ZW monsters are a whole other beast, a lot of their purpose is to equip either to a Ray (usually a specific Ray) or to a utopia monster but each provides utility, tornado blade prevent the equipped monster from being targeted by effects, lightning blade prevent other ZW equip monsters from being destroyed, unicorn spear negates the effect of a monster being attacked, asura strike allows you to attack all monsters your opponent controls, Pegasus saber is an effect activation negate. There are several more ZW monsters but they each offer their own utility to the situation and don't need to run them at more than 1 of as they are searchable by cards like armed sage, zexal construct and dragonic ray with most being able to equip from hand without summoning first there are a few outliers like Pegasus and eagle claws that need to be summoned first but can be special summoned if your LP is 2k less that your opponents (or by dragonic ray's effect to just equip them from hand or deck). Zexal is definitely one of those unga bunga big numbers be good decks but it's also got it nuances.

Pick one of these 2, there is no in between 1. 60-80% winrate, a meta slave, get absolutely nuclear when your broken card got limited to 1 or even banned, spends a shit tons of money to buy the latest cards yet still felt miserable, a noticable number of them cant read then get mad when they got negated or outplayed by overestimating your card effects, surrenders immediately when a non meta deck survives their otk deck. 2. 20-40% winrate players, plays leisurely and only battles to claim the dailies, some of them are F2P and getting rainbows hits way better since its FREE, next to nothing resources in their account, their brainrot but fun decks is unreliable but when you pull it off...its the best feeling in the world (if a meta slave is the receiving end of this, it felt even wayy better) knows the weirdest combos that meta slaves cannot fathom thus failing to anticipate it with negates until its too late, win atleast one of the alternate win conditions, Joker levels of sanity but atleast they have fun and that what matters the most to them.

How to lose your friends at locals 101. I guess that’s depending on the landscape at your locals. I used to go to a local game store for the YuGiOh club thing, and me, and some other kids, were anime fans, so we made fun decks of our favourite archetypes. They weren’t 1-to-1 anime decks. Just like I said. Archetypes that featured there. But whether it were a tournament or casuals, there were always a bunch of people playing with OTK decks and stuff. Here I was with a CyberDark or a Gate Guardian deck, and some one walks into the “casuals” with either Madolche OTK, or an Applousa turbo deck that uses a Lyrulisc engine. The HOTU tournament (Heart of the Underdog) that had its on archetype banlist, eventually got scrapped because there were too many meta sheep at this small town game store. Anime archetype decks are trash, yeah. But if you rock on up to a locals and consider playing LIVE Twins, Traptrix or Phantasmal “casual”, then You’re trash

A huge hurdle for Tenpai is that first normal summon in my opinion. The deck packs so many hand traps and board wipes that a lot of the time I’ll draw 1 actual Tenpai card along with wipes and disrupts. Going second is obviously preferred but sometimes you can end up with things pinned to getting off that first normal summon. I suppose it’s actually quite balanced though because usually if you’re successful then you win 9 times out of 10, as Tenpai just goes stupid after that.
