That was how she arranged and trained the first dog, the dog he took from the shelter was scheduled to be put down, and as they walk away they pass the spot where his wife collapsed.

There was a reason John didn’t kill Miss Perkins even though she was there to kill him. John was honoring the code of no killing on the grounds of the Continental which of course Perkins was not honoring.
