No, they weren't, Cecil attacked and fought other lions and hyenas that would've attad te he male buffaloes are happy to lose rivals through lion attacks. Anyway as soon there are slightly enough buffaloes the hunters kill them too. The trophy hunters kill the best and healthiest animals, while lions and buffaloes kill the weakest and smallest of each other that's how they evolved into strong animals, that's the meaning of survival of the fittest, a species get cleaned off their weakest members so that the next generation can surpass the old the old one. Hunters ruin it by killing the elite and letting the weak, pathetic losers spread their unworthy genes.

The dentist used stalkers/guides there to drag the meat trail to lure Cecil out of the park to be shot by the dentist. dentist should be arrested for that behavior.
