I was there, cars all over the place. No SC😊, just proper old school racing and marshalling.

Outstanding. Hard to believe that this article was for children's television! David Purley- PROPER bloke- ex Para, George Medal recipient. Tragic to think he lost his life in 1985 doing aerobatics- great bloke, down to earth, no ego on display.

Fantastic. John Noakes was some man. Fair play to Purley for treating him with genuine respect.

Thank you for posting this- just discovered. I love these cars - I was there the previous year in September when in this same event, John Foulston won the race. I was located in the same grandstand at 'Bomb Hole. Sadly, later in the week, John was killed while testing his car at Silverstone.

Sadly depleted grids in '82 (and '83). Sometimes all you had to do was turn up and finish to win your class. John Llewellyn's Scirocco was unusual being a GLi not a GTi but a regular class C winner, same for John Cooper's R5 gordini. Martin Williams won Class B in the Celica but his only opposition here were the two Dollies, and they'd been out of production for 2 years! Interesting to see the Volvo at the start, but apparently it didn't start the race...

A super little car (I'm a big Dolomite Sprint fan and one day hope to own one - price and funds permitting) in the hands of a master. Marshall perhaps looked a rather unlikely talent, but he was a real force to be reckoned with in an era where drivers worked hard on-track and they actually looked like they were working hard.

It turned out it was all fake, other than the spin at the end. Ralt-Honda did not want to disappoint the crowd with a 1-2 procession, so they pretended to have a battle. They planned for Moreno to win, but they messed that up! Thackwell was supposed to run wide coming out of the Woodcote chicane, allowing Moreno to repass. That's why Thackwell slowed at the line! As Moreno had already spun, Thackwell had to just take the win. I remember watching this on BBC2 that day, and was a little disappointed to read in Autosport the following Thursday that it was mostly staged.

if this was 2024: a double rainbow, therefore it is a fact that all of these drivers are women and you will go to jail if you disagree. Also a red flag because there is a bit of front wing on the grass and we can't be having that. God forbid someone hits it as opposed to the multiple racing cars on the track itself.

Am I right in thinking that Palhares passed under yellow into Druids? Coulthard has his hand in the air acknowledging the flag as Palhares makes the pass. In this day and age Coulthard could probably take a court case out against Palheres claiming emotional distress and damage to his potential career. Haha. Cheers for posting these - they are awesome.

My Dad and I went to Monaco on a Page and Moy racing package in 1973, David Purley was in our group and ordered wine for our table in French every night. He never mentioned that he was making his GP debut that Sunday, someone at the table mentioned he was racing F3! Charming as can be Purley seemed actually interested when I told him of my racing plans! Then a few weeks later there was the Dutch GP.....

Great memories! I was standing at Paddock watching this battle unfold and groaning aloud as I watched my mate 'Coynie' slipping further back into the pack! The Festival was always a brilliant weekend as the weather didn't take the edge off the racing and you'd be surrounded by true racing fans. Top off the weekend with a pint or three of ale in the Kentagon where Brian Jones held court and that would round off a truly memorable experience!

David Purley was a pure professional and also very blunt with his words. Possibly through years of brutal experience can create such a professional. He always cared for his team and the people he trained. He knew death was a possibility for everyone behind the wheel but he damn well enough tried to prevent that from ever happening again to him.
