Amen! Praise the Lord for He is able to turn the battle at the gate! This psalm is a wonderful petition to bring to the Lord in response to the ruin which the enemy has wrought within His house, sadly while men slept. Do you have a particular technique that you use for memorization?
@tjhallett
@tjhallett 28 күн бұрын
@@kathyPFUHLER-uj5ej Not really! Just simple repetition over long periods of time. I did try to keep to a schedule, doing a little bit of memory work Monday through Friday, every morning for 20-30 minutes on my drive to work, and maybe 20 minutes on my drive home (sometimes I’m more tired on the drive home and can’t bring myself to do it!). No memory work on weekends. I think that consistency helped. But really I would memorize a verse or two, repeat it until I really had it, and add a couple more verses. Sort of Shawshank Redemption escape method haha. Little bit at a time.

Also love the third verse of Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted. A reminder of the weight of our sin against a holy God, and the magnitude of Christ's marvelous grace for sinners.
@tjhallett
@tjhallett Ай бұрын
Absolutely! How interesting to compare the content of psalm 79 with the content of Stricken, Smitten. Both refer to God’s righteous judgment poured out, and His gracious deliverance of His people. Time and again I see that the psalms and our hymns bear witness to the same reality: Salvation through Christ! The psalms do so more indirectly, our hymns, more directly.

Thanks again. In Scotland this psalm is sometimes sung in the same metre to the tunes Austrian Hymn and Ebenezer. Hyfrydol and Dim Ond Iesu are used too. There's also a version to Calon Lân. It's a pity that the Trinity Psalter and Sing Psalms don't overlap more. I suppose it's like having several English versions of the Bible. Maybe in the next round of psalmody reforms we'll get a common set of words. Having said that folks probably had the same complaint when we moved from the Genevan Psalter to the 1650 versions.
@tjhallett
@tjhallett Ай бұрын
Yes it is unfortunate that there is not more overlap. I think the best thing is to know the substance of the psalm itself, then whatever versification one comes across will still be comprehensible in the singing of it. God bless!

William Wilberforce would take his hat off to you. Some of us find the metrical versions easier to memorise. I once met a preacher who was able to recite big chunks of one of Paul's letters - Corinthians - I think it was. He didn't set out to do so but had preached through it thoroughly and it left its mark on him.
@tjhallett

@@trystwithchrist I didn’t know that Wilberforce was connected to Scripture memory! It has become a passionate hobby of mine. I find I understand a book so much more thoroughly when I commit it to memory. Something about saying it to myself day after day after day… Meditation!

Hey brother! Around the 56-57 minute mark, you did indeed miss the line. After "God in His holy habitation" and right before "He leads out the prisoner(s) to prosperity", this is the line you are looking for. "God settled the solitary in a home". Verse 6 of Ps. 68. Funny enough, I relate to that verse.

@@BohemianCat89 Hey there! Yep, that is totally the line I missed! I’m pretty sure that’s the only verse I completely omitted, though I definitely mixed up some words here and there throughout.
