Nice explanations, thanks. I like the suggestion to ease the sails until luffing, to show when the sails are too loose/luffing and then tighten up. One thing that helps my students understand close-hauled is to have them try pointing as high as they can into the wind, to see where the no-go-zone starts and how the sails react, then they can come back to close-hauled. They can actually feel and see the difference. Once students know how to tack and gybe and trim sails accordingly, then we practise doing a slow 360 circle in light winds, looking at each point of sail and how to trim and adjust the sails as we go around the circle.
