Hi Ed, gorgeous looking plane, great video thanks. The manual is very vague, you can fit pull pull rudder or pull push like you have? The manual gives the measurements for the site of the pull pull horn, so you can cut the covering to expose the slot , but for the pull push it states the measurement as N/A. Is it obvious where it is? Likewise for the servo slot? I've just got the 67" extra, had 4 flights. Is the Laser very different? I dont like the pull pull system, looks messy

Sorry Patrick, my Laser has gone to plane heaven - a long time ago! The number one purpose for pull-pull rudders is moving the servo weight away from the rear. I have been installing pull-pull systems for a long time and really don't mind them. My HS-645MG's servos are standard size and they may have allowed for just mini sized servos. There is a dotted line showing how to open mini servo recesses to take standard sized servos. Take care locating the precut holes.....

@eddrakes Really sorry to hear that. What about the hole for the horn,is it there for push pull too? Like I said, the manual gives measurement postion for the pull pull slot but says N/A for pill push, literally. I don't understand the servo thing, if you say weight is everything why not fit mini when the torque can be similar, anyway, thanks for replying

@@patrickhoyle8357 If my memory serves me well, the pull-pull slot through the rudder serves as the push-pull slot for direct servo-rudder control. The rudder servo fastens into a recess low on the left side of the fuselage below the leading edge of the left stabiliser. It is low down to avoid body-clashing with the elevator servo inside the fuselage. I have photos of mine on this page --> www.draneer.com/OlympicFlying/PilotRCLaser67Full/index.html

There are 4 screws that hold the cowling on, 2 at the bottom 2 on top with provision of another at the top in the middle . Do you use it with a captive nut or settle for the four already in place? I have a spare screw and captive nut and wonder if that's what it's for?
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 ай бұрын
My version looks different. There are only three captive nuts in my cowl ring - two at the bottom and one in the middle top. The two holes in the top left and right of the fuselage former (supporting the cowl) are unused blanks. there are no matching holes in the ring! I have a detailed photo. How can I get that tp you? WhatsApp??
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 ай бұрын
Further, that former is pretty thin!! I have epoxied a 10mm thick triangular brace from the front side of the former extending forward to the top/front of the motorbox. The brace stops the former and cowl from wobbling/vibrating during flight. For more photos of this plane completed, check out the Menu--> Tech/Art photos section on my web page for this plane here ---> www.draneer.com/OlympicFlying/PilotRCExtraNG67/home.html I have added plenty of bracing into the cockpit area to minimise vibration usually brought on by a prop struggling with heavy aerobatic manouvres. You may have noticed that I prefer wooden or carbon props - its for their stiffness and consequent quiet running.

What thread size are the ball links where they screw into the servo arms, M2 or M3mm? Looks nice, about to buy one but cant decide on colour, grey and black for UK skies are out
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 ай бұрын
For the 67" NG... Push rod thread is 2mm. Socket head screw binding the ball link end/ball to the servo horn is 1.5mm. Hope this helps. These days I tend not to employ the SFGs and fly with "naked' wings. Knife edge performance is still very good. The Cub yellow, black, grey and white scheme really grows on you. Funnily enough, the scale guys at the field prefer this colour scheme to the more garish/bright schemes. I also have the green and red/blue schemed versions - they all fly really well. At this URL [www.draneer.com/OlympicFlying/PilotRCExtraNG67/home.html] you can browse my web page for this model. @@patrickhoyle8357 If you are talking about "drilled and tapped", are you referring to aluminium servo arms? My kit was delivered with 1.5mm socket head screws to hold the ball link onto the horn. These 1.5mm screws came complete with lock nuts and are intended to be bolted up through an untapped hole in a servo horn! My servo horns are the standard plastic ones that come with the servos..... I remember thinking I should use larger screws and contemplated changing them out for 2 or 3mm ball links and aluminium horns. Eventually, however, I used what was supplied and it all works very well.

Hello about the rudder servo, it’s posible to put in the rear part ?
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 7 ай бұрын
That is a bit difficult to tell whether there is a recess available for a rear-mounted rudder servo. The problem with doing that is the extra weight then applied at the rear. That would have to be counterweighted at the front - normally by locating the 10S/12S batteries a bit further forward. Even with the mid-mounted rudder servo(pull-pull) the batteries are already nearly disappearing under the cowl at the front! It is all up to you, of course. Just perform COG checks before fixing or cutting anything! Good luck. I am very happy with the mid-mounted rudder servo.

Innitial flights were based on the nominated, centre-of-tube marking for COG. The plane was very pitchy. A quick geometric check showed that the "normal?" COG should be more like 30mm in front of the nominated COG. I added 120g of lead onto the motor box, just behind the motor, to achieve this new COG. This was WAY BETTER for my flying style - precision aerobatics.

Prop pitch is conventionally measured at a specified radius, usually 2/3 or 3/4 of radius. This is entirely arbitrary, since the measured pitch will usually be different at each radiius. Pitch measured in this way will allow a rough sorting of props, but it is useless for performance analysis.
@aeromodeller1
@aeromodeller1 Жыл бұрын
There is geometric pitch and aerodynamic pitch. They are not the same. Geometric pitch is how far the blade element chord would move forward as if it was a screw, moving with the blade element chord tangent to the line of advance. Propellers can not work like that. They do not screw through a solid medium. The blade element must have an attack angle relative to the path through the air to develop lift. The distance travedled through the air is less than the geometric pitch. I prefer to call that the advance; the distance traveled through the air in one revolution. My comment was on the geometric pitch. The geometric pitch can be calculated from the blade element angle at each radius. Almost all props I have measured have a different geometric pitch at each radius.
@aeromodeller1
@aeromodeller1 Жыл бұрын
That will give you the pitch at the 30 degree blade angle. But the pitch usually varies along the blade, different at each radius.
@eddrakes
@eddrakes Жыл бұрын
Prop Pitch definition is "the distance a propeller moves through a fluid in one complete revolution", not the angle of the prop which varies through its length. Ask if you need a more complete explanation. Sorry if you are having trouble understanding this... Watch again, listen to the instructions carefully. It works very well!!

This is a beautiful flying plane when you arrange your balance point at the COG nominated, center of the tube. In your case, I assume the battery is as far forward as it can go. A few of my planes were a bit tail heavy. In these cases I bolted lead weights onto the motor box behind the motor (as much as 120g but varies case by case) until the COG nominated is the static balance point with the wings level - not pitched up or down. The COG nominated results in a plane that needs a little down on the elevator when flying inverted. I am a precision aerobatics flier, not 3D.

( they say 1661 mm mine approximately 1730mm) Also some guys say the factory put CG more forward so i could be on the rear edge or about there of the wing pipe. But i like to follow the manufacturer as i trust they spent some time designing the plane. But really doesn’t sound right adding 200 g of dead weight. Sensor V3 is terrific - provides 2 independant, regulated power sources into the Rx. Under advice, I am regulating the 2 x 2S lipos down to 7.9 volts which then remains at constant "voltage in" for an entire flight. The colour coding - indicating remaining (%age) battery charge - is very helpful, letting one know approximately how much is left in the batteries - you do not need an external checker.

Centre of gravity as marked, over the joiner tube, is good. Since the rudder servo is located mid fuselage length, I had to move some weight further back from the front of the plane. Hi Ed thank you for the unboxing video... I'm just in the process of building mine at the moment after owning 2 67in Slicks I've added lots of reinforcement to the small motorbox essentially making it strong enough if the prop hits the ground the PROP breaks! Instead of it ripping these extremely weak motor boxes out!!!...I added carbon fiber 4mm X 4mm rods along all 4 sides/corners and drilled holes through main motorbox firewall and glued these in place plus I also added the Balsa fillets that come with the kit down the inside corners and then glued/screwed into the ends of these to the main firewall to hold it in..plus I also made another piece of plywood and glued this onto the front face...these are weak too!! Great planes but this little motor box lets them down IMHO. What made you choose that particular Dualsky motor? I run the Dualsky GA2000R with an hobbywing 120A and it pulls 135A on a 18 x 10 prop...I love the motor 25cc petrol equivalent. I have KZbin videos if your interested under David Hall 67in Slick Love to see your progress building it.. There a lot longer than the Slick 5 inch I've also added some carbon rods to some of the vertical uprights after realising there's NO UPRIGHT VERTICAL Carbon fiber in these planes...and I've had a few tumbles with mine and the internal vertical plywood can break up... I like your idea for 3 inch Dubro wheels especially off grass strips!!! I tried one of those YEP ESC on a 60 in plane I have with a Sunnysky motor and I couldn't get a SETTING Even with the program card I tried allsorts of combinations of timing etc but gave up in the end it just kept stuttering... Good luck with your new NG look forward to some flight footage hopefully ? 😉

Dave did you take any photos of the mods you did ?? I just yesterday crashed my 67 inch extra, I did put extra bracing in but would like to compare, I had a dle 20 in mine, also did you use the supplied engine mount ??

@@chrisvernon7608 Hi Chris I didn't use the supplied engine mount ... I'm running the electric setup using the supplied motorbox which is very very weak ...see my other videos on my channel....I used carbon rods and extra plywood on the front... I've mended the NG many times ....and come to the conclusion the landing gear is way way too rigid it breaks the fuselage on any heavy contact ...IT SHOULD BREAK but it doesn't it rips the fusalage to bits. I have had three of the 67 NG's and only two now and one of them is two planes ...be very careful with the wing bolts and quick release mechanism....I would recommend using aluminium wing bolts or making the sliders stiffer....one of my wings came out mid flight....good luck with the repairs....I use plenty of thin CA and bi carbonate...not easy to get everything in line if it's heavily damaged...I had to move the wing tube to align with the tail....but it flies perfectly. I have one tatty plane but with expensive gear in it...so it should be reliable for a while.

Thanks for the response. Is the triangle stock used to beef up the landing gear and firewall?

All airframe structures are as they were out of the box. All I have added is my equipment and red-painted support platforms for that equipment.

How did you manage the build without the build manual? Any problems?
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 жыл бұрын
I have built plenty of these before. So, some experience helps. Try using this manual (online) which matches the 78" version quite well. pilot-rc.com/manual-extra-ng-103/

Max size propeller? 25"?
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify your question, do you mean 25" prop at 12" pitch, same motor and same battery? If you did that you would blow up the motor and ESC and battery pretty quickly!! According to eCalc, all things remaining as shown and just changing the prop diameter to 21" would put the motor near to its power limit. I like to run my equipment quite cool while still getting the performance required for the aerobatics I do. I get 560watts/kg (on the equipment shown) which is plenty for easy verticals.

How do the ailerons work? Are there four servos.
@eddrakes
@eddrakes 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, four servos. Two "Y" leaded for each side then carefully tuned to give virtually the same throws each for top and bottom.

Hi! Where did you get those motor support rods? How did you secure them to the motor box? Are they working well? Thanks for your answers.

3/16th or 4mm Threaded Steel Rod -------------------------------------------------------- This rod should be available from your local hardware store together with the plain nuts, nyloc nuts and washers. The result is a very strong motor mount due to multiple portal framing rigidity. Method: - Drill 4mm(+) holes accurately centred over the cross-hairs lasered into the motor box face. The hole centres should match those of the motor spider. - Dowse the holes in thin CA so as to harden up the area and resist the clamping pressure of the nuts. - Accurately calculate and cut four threaded rods long enough to position the motor with allowance for all fasteners and final adjustment. Make sure the cut ends are chamfer cut/sanded so as not to ruin the nyloc nuts as they are wound on. - The order of parts on one rod starting from inside the motor box is: Nyloc nut, washer, motor box wall, washer, plain nut (including blue thread lock), [outer end] plain nut (including blue thread lock), washer, spider arm, washer and nyloc nut. The final result is a very rigid motor support that makes for a quiet-running power system.
