Growing up at Swamies late 70's to late 80's I watched Dale do the impossible. New Years day 1982 one of the 1st El Ninjo's. It had been raining like crazy and there were dead cows in the line up that washed down from Escondido. And it was HUGE, I mean HUGE. I am out there wishing I had not paddled out and Dale takes off on BOMB. Im near the channel and see him bottom turn and go straight up the face for a rip off the top and he switches stance while vertical on an at least 16' foot wave. It was INSANE. Of course pulled it and kicked out somewhere down 85-60's. ( kidding ) but closer to pipes than Swamies. I caught one wave, and went STRAIGHT for the channel. Even Jimmy Bear was out!!

The ocean is Dale's canvas and he is the paint brush. I’ve never seen anyone who could do as many difficult maneuvers and perform them consistently. I have so many great memories of him surfing....he's one of the best...awesome surfer.

I lived and surfed in San Diego (Pacific Beach) during the '70s. It was always a thrill to watch Dale surf La Jolla during the big swells. I was paddling out at Big Rock one day when I saw Dale take off backside and pull into a deep, deep barrel. The wave spit, and Dale came flying out switchfoot. Or maybe he pulled in goofy foot and came flyin' out backside. Either way, Dale had it wired.

Are you kidding me?!!!! You shouldn't quote Bruce Brown as saying "Absolutely Terrific" !! Anyone that knows Bruce knows thats he doesn't speak like that about anything. To make a surf movie and be stoked about it is one thing, but to put yourself in the same category as Bruce and the others is completely insulting to them all.

I camped at Saladita at Lourdes' family's property (Enramada Jaqueline?) in 2003 for about a month. Surfed with Corky and crew most mornings. Cool guy, always chattering in the lineup and picking off great waves with amazing smoothness. He turned and dropped in behind people and goofed and was a cool host to the many travelers like me. Respect. Also the guy Tim from Seal Beach CA who was an old school lifeguard was legend down there too. Good times.

He had an LJ reef wired so well back in the day that it could now easily be called Dobson's, but it isn't. .
