That Absinthe set was filmed outside of the Pima County Public Library, Main Branch, in Tucson. Gat-Rot also played that show. I wish I had a recording of that set. Absinthe will always be one of my favorite Tucson bands.

The most fun part about this JChurch show was stepping out for a breather in front of the student Union and having about 300 people run full steam past us, most of them naked, celebrating the UofA basketball team's victory. It ended up turning into a bit of a riot in downtown Tucson that night! Thank you to whoever uploaded this. I am a singer of Scathe and the bassist of Deth or Eldona, and these shows were such great memories for me!!

@@journeyhomemeditation I remember you Mike. I’m Andrew from the Boston area. I attended the u of a for a couple years. I put out a video compilation called old school to new school of hardcore bands I filmed in Massachusetts. Very DIY. The J church show was fun, I didn’t film this but I traded videos with a guy who did. That’s funny the finals game was at the same time. I remember that night broadway ave was going crazy. I lived in a dorm that was a hotel my second year there. I remember back in those days Tucson was moving towards a metallic hardcore scene from a punk one. Some people didn’t like it. Also I remember when earth crisis came to Tucson and I interviewed karl buechner for the Arizona wildcat. A bunch of people came up to me after to ask me how it went and what he was like. I guess from a far he can be an intimidating person. Good memories too! You channel looks interesting too. I subscribed. Thanks Mike !

@@megagulpvideos No-No… Thank YOU! Are you a big fan of theirs? I rarely get to speak to anyone who likes them, or even know them at all! But whenever I do find someone, they’re usually just as much of a fan as me. I find it a little odd that they’re apparently so polarizing… It’s not like they have a sound that’s strange, or an acquired taste, most of it is catchy pop-punk, or maybe power-pop… no nasally vocals anywhere to be found… and there are plenty of slow jams when you’re not in the mood for something energetic - so what exactly is the problem here? could it really just be because Lance wasn’t your average “Oily Variety Bohunk”?! (Somebody better appreciate that reference, it’s a fucking classic!)
@megagulpvideos3 ай бұрын
@@scottbaylo I got into them through honest dons records and the drama of alienation record which is really good. I just didn’t really know about them til I picked up the first honest dons welcome wagon cd sampler. Back then I ate up everything fat wreck chords , epitaph , burning heart records, etc. lots of slick sounding skate punk etc. so I would say I’m not a hardcore j church fan but I like some of their stuff. I love Lances honesty and how prolific he was. Gone way too soon. Also if you don’t know already check out a band called Doc Hopper , specifically their aloha album, and the ringing ear records label from the 90’s. Great straight up pop punk bands, also sinkhole, bender , the ags, huffy. I think it would up your alley. Gotta love the 90’s
@scottbaylo3 ай бұрын
@@megagulpvideos I actually loved drama of alienation too, but I remember reading something where Lance said he wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, and for a long time I couldn’t understand why. I think that recording is just too (I like a term you used before, so I’m gonna borrow it) slick for them, and stands out from their other albums in the same way Jawbreaker’s Dear You did with them - 2 layers of vocals on most songs, and I think some had it for the whole track, where they rarely used it before, and usually just for something like the chorus. Even though they had plenty of songs that, on their own, would feel right at home with everything else on Fat… they’re just not a Fat type of band. And don’t get me wrong, I still love a lot of those bands, and always will, but there’s something about Fat Wreck Chords in general that hasn’t aged well - and it ain’t the music! It’s the way the label did exactly what the corporate side of the music industry does - sign 10 bands doing the same basic act, and it was all the “same-sameness” that derailed the potential showing in the early 90’s - so many different types of sounds playing together in the same show, but not so different that you’d just stay to see one of them… Jesus, I gotta stop going off the rails with these rants! Wow, you just brought back a long forgotten memory! Are you from the east coast/tristate area? For some reason I seem to remember Doc Hopper starting from around here, and they were somehow tied to another band that is right at the tip of my tongue, but can’t quite get it out… (now looking back at your list, I’m pretty sure it was sinkhole, right?) I remember being excited going to buy that album (I think I heard 1 song on a comp that was really good or something, but ended up disappointed with the album) I’ll have to go back and try it again - I can usually remember most things I listened to from that time, but I’m coming up blank on this one, so hopefully it should jog my memory. I don’t know those last 2 at all, so I’m excited to hear them! I haven’t really listened to much of anything made after the early 2000’s, anytime I seem to find “new” music I really like, it turns out the band was formed before the early 2000’s… There was even an album from 2012, I thought I finally found something new that was really good, but it turned out they were formed in the 90’s anyway (the band is called “Grabass Charlestons” album is “Dale and the careeners” sooo good!) ok, I’m gonna try to shut up now…
