I noticed them using mortar tubs as scaffold too,but if you don't have scaffolding they would be stable and if you're only laying between two windows you don't need to build scaffolding the entire length of the house. PS,That level is for shit.

I am an apprentice of 1 year and I can tell you this. They do NOT want to teach you how to lay bricks, they have no interest in teaching. They can earn money as a ‘bricklayer’ by putting the trowel down and being paid a salary from the local government funded college. As I’m in the end of my first year I have undertaken my own pointing jobs (lime mortar) and research, read and watch videos on KZbin. Yes it’s bloody boring and miserable but I will have to keep watching until I can competently lay bricks the right way. I am a hoddy through the week on a new build and also lay bricks and blocks when I am ahead. Now - Am I right saying after the skwint there should be a queens closure? and uniform at the other end of the course?

Not a bricklaying issue, seen this alot. If the engineer was sent the detail it's very easy to increase or decrease overall size by 25mm to 50mm all around and seen this done alot because the builder doesn't want to pay the bricklayers to do it again. This wouldn't have been noticed untill above dpc and block and beam plans are completely separate as there made during the construction process not pre construction. It would have started with all the internal walls being wrong aswell before someone put 2+2 together

This is probably because it’s timber frame, the joiner hasn’t got the roof on to the right measurements and they have had to build it out of plumb to get the brickwork to match the bad joinery work! Not always the bricklayers fault. Some times you have to hold out of Plumb to pull other trades out the shit!

All the good bricklayers that are retiring are being replaced by young lads that buy a trowel and level and once they can run the line think they should be on £200 a day.It takes years for a bricklayer to achieve a high standard of work through slowly improving over time and the knowledge needed also takes time to learn through experience, I’ve seen gangs turn up on sites in the past pull up with their kit in the back of a beat up estate car all drinking red bull smoking a fag and then chucking all their rubbish out the windows and I know pretty much what the quality of their work will be like. One gang even managed to build a big four bedroom house first lift back to front with not one of them wondering why the front door was 2100mm wide and nowhere near the middle of the house. I don’t touch big site work anymore because nobody cares about doing a good job it’s all about just chucking them up as fast as possible, I’m 56 now and I build one off projects which we price up build and manage ourselves for our clients well away from all the idiots rocking up with their Costa coffee’s and coughing their guts up
