I have a matched pair of 14" Avedis paper thin hi hats from the 60's that I bought new in the same weight range. The top one has a tall bell and fine lathing which makes it very bright, but soft. The bottom one weighs just a few grams LESS than the top one, has a shallow bell and wider lathing which makes it very dark and soft. This pair sounds bright but still has a very nice "chick". I also have a slightly newer Avedis top from the 70's with wide lathing and tall bell and weighs just a few grams more than the other top and sounds much darker, almost like an old Kerope from Istanbul. I use this dark top with the dark bottom to get a perfect pairing of dark, soft and buttery sounding cymbals. This pair sounds dark with a very nice "chick". I bought all 3 cymbals new and I have the sound of 2 different pairs of hi hats. There is something very magical about the sound of the OLD Avedis Zildjian's. The newer the Zildjian's, both A's and K's, the less I like them. I'm a jazz drummer who plays small to medium venues and I love to hear the definition of my sticks and brushes on all my cymbals.

I'm located in the Netherlands indeed and could ship worldwide. I haven't listed the hats on my website yet, probably because I'm not 100& sure if I'd sell them or play them myself. Feel free to reach out to send me an email at [email protected] though for some details about price and shipping quotes.

I've only owned one set of Paiste cymbals and I hated them. They came with the Sonor drum set I purchased and sold them immediately, replacing them with my vintage "K" Zildjians. I've been trying to like Paiste cymbals over the last few decades and I've come to believe that Paiste is like Zildjian in that, the more vintage the cymbal is, the better it sounds. This ride sounds like an old "A" Zildjian which is not bad, just a tad too bright for my style of jazz. Still, I am still looking for a Paiste which "scratches my itch".

These old lightweight Avedis Zildjian's are wonderful! I have a pair of 14" ones that I bought in the mid-60's that have identical patina and a very similar sound. The matched pair has a slightly lighter weight bottom with wide lathing and a shallower bell than the top which has fine lathing and a taller bell.. This was before the American Zildjian's started declining in sound quality for jazz, just to make the rock players happy.

good sounding cymbals the way you play them….
@boomerguy9935Ай бұрын
In my experience, when the weights of the top and bottom are close, the profile of the bell and the lathing are much more important than the weights. My vintage hi hats have lighter bottoms with wide lathing and a shallow bell, yet sound much darker than the tops. I like to mix and match them according to the crash and ride combinations that I use.
@boomerguy9935Ай бұрын
I've never been a Paiste fan but these hi hats are awesome!
@boomerguy9935Ай бұрын
I love this sound! The vintage Avedis (Pre-A Series) actually sound better than most of the modern Zildjian K's. I two vintage 14" Avedis hi hat cymbals from the same era but they are not mates. I matched them according to their sound which is soft and dark, and they sound like they were made for each other. For more volume and a stronger "chick", I also have a vintage 14" K Light top that I use with the same Avedis bottom. Another match made in heaven. Both tops are slightly heavier than the bottom which has a shallow bell and wide lathing. The 3 hi hat cymbals make 2 wonderful sounding pairs which could be called siblings instead of twins. They will never be for sale. I'm 75 years old and I've been playing for over 60 years, still learning about the wonders of the history and sounds of the vintage cymbals of all brands. Keep these videos coming!

I love this cymbal! It's a shame that Zildjian doesn't make cymbals like this, anymore. I have an EAK 20" Jazz Ride that weighs 2002g with a brilliant finish that is very similar but a little more "buttery smooth" with shorter sustain. EAK's rule!
@driftdrums5218Ай бұрын
@@boomerguy9935 yeah for sure a great cymbal and I couldn’t agree more that it’s a shame that they don’t make their K’s like these anymore! These light rides have a flatter profile than the jazz rides and a little more forgiving bell.
@boomerguy9935Ай бұрын
@@driftdrums5218 I also have a K Light hi hat top (899g) that I love, paired with an equally light weight old 1960's Avedis bottom (680g) that has a shallow bell and wide lathing. It's a wonderful, soft and dark combination with great definition at all volumes. For small venues, I pair the same Avedis bottom with its matched top (875g) which also had a dark sound for the Avedis line. The sound is amazing with brushes and wood tip sticks and a gentle touch.

Wow! It sounds like a K Jazz ride. The older Avedis cymbals sound so much better than any of the newer A's and most of the newer K's. I have some old Avedis hi hats that actually sound like Turkish K's. I wish that Zildjian knew that newer is not always better.
