NEStroid was my first experience with Metroid and I have a soft spot for it despite its extremely ugly flaws.
@mattgraham21382 ай бұрын
Games back then were more difficult and time-consuming and unfair. They could've at least said something in the manual about the destroyable blocks that looked like regular blocks. I think I found those by accident in the bottom of one vertical corridor in Norfair and then found the high jump boots and those two things almost cracked the game wide open for me. I only beat the game twice on a real NES though. Tourian is an extremely difficult level no matter what you do. But the Metroids drop large health and missile refills, so if you can kill them quickly, it's probably a time saver to go there when you've got about 150 or so health and some missiles.
@LoganWolf3 ай бұрын
loved the video, but your issue with the beam is kinda funny to me. you do realize there are 2 ice beams in the game, right?
@thenamesjoey32 ай бұрын
Yeah, but my main issue is that if you grabbed the Wave beam and didn't know before heading to Tourian that you need the Ice beam to kill the Metroids, you'd be pretty much screwed, most likely forcing a restart and having to grind energy and missiles and go grab one of the ice beams before trying again.
@LoganWolf2 ай бұрын

Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Retro Metroid Game !
@yuvi30003 ай бұрын
Hey there! Found your video via KZbin suggestions and I found your video entertaining and, more importantly in this day and age, respectful. I see a lot of KZbin videos about games that are full of insight, jokes, opinions, etc. But the vast majority of them do not talk about the hard work put into the game or discuss the OSTs or show off the credits of the people who mattered! Please continue doing those things because I feel like it's something that doesn't happen often enough and is quickly lost in long-running channels as well. About the game and your opinion though: I only recently played the first game in its entirety as well and I really enjoyed it. I think, in general, if you're comfortable with retro games, knowing the limitations, etc, you'll love this game. I loved the game manual which tells you everything you need to know and is much better at explaining the story (for many of the older Metroid games, actually). But as you said, the absolute worst part of it is starting each respawn with minimal health. I think the best scenario is once you've unlocked Tourian because Metroids provide a massive amount of resources compared to other enemies. The game doesn't show that the pickups are any different but it's obvious if you keep track of your energy and missile count. But if you're a seasoned player or your intention is to finish the game quickly to get the best ending, you'll probably never want to die after unlocking Tourian and you'd instead expect to finish that final area in one go. Shout-out to the second worst part of the game which is continuing with a password that is 50 pages long. I suppose good players intend to finish this game in one session without needing passwords, but my first playthrough was absolutely not that. Your quick clip explains, but could never fully capture the frustration of that single destructible block climb after Kraid's battle. Good luck to all the noobs who have and still will spend an hour getting up that damn tall room. Personally, I am an explorer and not a speedrunner, so it's a bit sad to me that there's so much love and effort put into the idea of exploring in this franchise, but a large chunk of players avoid exploring in order to finish the games as fast as possible. I did initially also intend to play without a map, but that went out the window after a while, due to the very similar room layouts throughout the game. Without using a guide or map, there's a lot of important paths, rooms, items and upgrades that are entirely hidden from players without shooting or bombing everything in every room. Please make more videos like this and I hope more people watch your stuff! Good luck!

As a child of the 80's, I remember beating this game and feeling EXHAUSTED. And no wonder; yup, dying (ever) was NOT an option. If anything, you'd do a playthrough and leave that hidden ceiling energy tank for the initial refill, get the passcode, and make an attempt at sieging M.B. and her crazy face-sucking jellyfish fiends. For "fun", I tried a few wave beam only runs at the end. IT'S DIFFICULT AS IT SOUNDS, but possible. Even after baaarely doing it once, I had no interest in playing the game after that. Super Metroid was far better and far more forgiving, and let's just chalk up the original game's issues to hardware limitations (because it's true).

You thinking Metroid 1 was a Zero Mission Demake brings up something interesting... demakes are always only fan projects.. I think it'd be so interesting if there was ever an official demake of a game.. like just for curiosity sake I'd wanna see what would come from it since sometimes limitations breed creativity.. Wow you can get Screw Attack so early... guessing the only non-regular doors are missiles then.. And oof the nonstackable beams was a weird choice.. *and* without an inventory it is even worse... if.. there was an inventory it totally wouldn't be *as* bad.. I just noticed something about the Mother Brain room.. the turrets.. shoot at diagonals! The turrets are more advanced than Samus!
@thenamesjoey33 ай бұрын
An official demake from fans would be interesting, I'd love to see what people could cook up on older hardware with Zero mission as the framework. That's the best part of this game, Screw Attack super early makes everything else way better. I figure the non-stackable beams were due to a hardware limitation, the inventory I'm not so sure, maybe a hardware limitation as well, but Zelda had an inventory on NES, so I'm not sure, maybe they didn't have enough time during development? Those turrets were the bane of my existence lol, they did more damage than the rinka's did.

Metroid feels like a puzzle game trying to be an action game. It only starts to feel like an action game when you know where everything is and all of the secrets are. I love action games but Metroid has always frustrated me. At the same time I LOVED Metroid Fusion because it didn't have much of those puzzle elements. I also love Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the subsequent Castlevania non-linear games that have come out. Metroid though, I just can't get into it like I should be able to. Even the remake with Zero Mission. It bugs me.
@thenamesjoey33 ай бұрын
Do you mean the game worlds are too puzzle-esque and frustrating to navigate, or that you need to be looking for all of the secrets/know where everything is to enjoy the game? I know a lot of people who felt like they had to seek out every item and find every secret when in reality a lot of upgrades are optional, and it kind of ruined the game for them, I can also understand the series having moments in each game where it's a little too hard/cryptic to tell where to go, I've played Metroid for so long that it doesn't bother me but I can see it killing enjoyment for anyone new. Would love to hear your thoughts and perspective on it!
@SomeCanine3 ай бұрын
@@thenamesjoey3 I mean it's unintuitive like a puzzle except with the shapes of the pieces hidden. You know the vague goal of destroying mother brain but it gives you absolutely no direction. You bang your head against walls until you find obstacles. All the while, there are secret walls that look exactly the same as all of the other walls that you need to destroy to get upgrades. I only played the remake Zero Mission recently so I don't remember what the original was like on this but I seem to remember at least a few of the actual progression paths being tied behind needing to bomb or go through a wall hidden by destroyable blocks that are hidden with no hint that they are secret destroyable walls. They are not oddly colored. In most cases there are not enemies walking near them. There's no air below the ground with enemies walking below them to hint that you might be able to go there or anything of the sort. It's like a puzzle in that you just have to FUMBLE your way around in an adventure-game-esque fashion just attacking every tile in the game unless you have a guide telling you exactly where to go for everything. IMO, that is horrible game design. It's a miracle that something good came from this game design which was the upgrade and come back later strategy. This gave a reason to re-use areas so developers didn't have to design them once and never use them again. They could even put harder monsters in the same areas when a character backtracks in some games if they wanted to, making optimal use of the background areas that they had to thoroughly test.
@thenamesjoey33 ай бұрын
I understand that frustration, I personally think the only games that are guilty of doing this are Metroid NES, Metroid 2, and one instance in Super Metroid where there is a wall that you have to walk through with no indication it's a fake wall in order to progress, in NEStroid and Metroid 2, you definitely have parts where you fumble around trying to find out what tile is breakable in order to find something/progress deeper, it's a big part of why I played NEStroid with a map, Fusion didn't quite have that issue as much because it gave you a clear destination and most times would explain a good route to get there, so you knew even if you went into a room that a wall might be fake and to shoot/bomb anything in your path to get to that destination, Zero Mission I think hits a good middle spot where the Chozo statues when you've sat in their hand in morph ball would mark a spot on your map, telling you where the next upgrade is, but not explicitly telling you how to get there, hopefully encouraging you to explore. I can get that when it takes a detour to get something else or that it isn't the fastest path to said upgrade it can be frustrating, sometimes ya just wanna progress, ya know? I can't quite pin down any times that progression paths being blocked with breakable walls have frustrated me, but I have been playing Metroid for so long that I'm inclined to shoot around when I'm stuck, it's kind of ingrained in my brain. (However replaying games with a more critical eye in future videos will probably refresh my memory, and I'll be sure to bring up any particular examples of this in the other games) The best I can say is it might come down to a preference or a mindset difference, I love the non-linear Castlevania games as well, but for different reasons than I love Metroid, Castlevania feels to me more like checking out different rooms with different upgrades to see what's in each room of the castle, and while there are secret breakable walls with optional upgrades much like Metroid, I appreciate that usually the progression gate is a tough boss and/or coming back to an obstacle with a new upgrade to get to a new part of the map, but Metroid I like because it feels like I'm exploring and blasting through the caverns of a desolate abandoned planet, exploring ruined civilizations, shooting and bombing down walls to find the way forward in these winding caves, kind of a very explosive form of spelunking! If you can't get into Metroid, that's all good! There's games I can't get into but feel like I should, so I end up just admiring them from a distance. I hope this comment is somehow helpful, if it's super ramble-y I apologize, thanks for sharing your view on it, I like hearing different viewpoints on the games I love, if you want me to focus on one aspect of the game in particular and give my perspective just reply and lemme know!
@SomeCanine3 ай бұрын
@@thenamesjoey3 I appreciate your lengthy and diplomatic response. I think it really just comes down to taste. I personally think it's bad game design to have players fumbling around in the dark with no indication of what they should be doing, no idea of what sub-goal they should be accomplishing or how to do it, etc. I think I've beaten my opinion to death here. Besides that point, I have OCD so it's extra frustrating to not be able to get all of the extra items without a guide as well. In Zero Mission it was especially frustrating to have to look up guides to learn how to shine spark up ramps to maintain run speed and jump and morph ball into tiny holes and stuff just for a super missile. There's a whole lot of extra little spots like that as well. I think they intended on them to be bonus fun little extras for the super gamers but it was just added frustration for me. It felt like requiring a screen scroll glitch in a castlevania game to be able to pick up a secret weapon or something because of the difficulty factor with the inputs. I think if they just showed off some neat easter eggs or something, they wouldn't have annoyed me, but they counted toward completion percent.
