The Sabfoil quick release system fixes a problem that didnt exist. Removing 4 bolts is not that onerous given the enormous mechanical advantage. The QR system is just contrary to what is mechanically superior (and the weight and the overly complex manufacturing). Until sabfoil stop using the system I wont use their mast.

better than the mode pro?
@stevefollis9454
@stevefollis9454 21 күн бұрын
Not sure how to define better, but here is a basic summary: Positives: 1: way better visibility (insane), when you go back to a standard wing it feels like your riding blind. 2: slightly lighter in weight 3: better valve inflation system 4: less prone to punchers from the handles when folding (this has happened to quite a few people I know who have north). With the Aqueous you roll it up 5: boom in my opinion is better than handles. 6: does not absorb water 7: possibly points slightly higher into wind 8: no sign of bagging out, but to be honest the mode pro is minimum vs other wing types 9: most stable wing I’ve ever used 10: bigger wind range (amazing power output/pump). Questionable: 1: max speed (seems the same for me) 2: roll up for air traveling (1.25m for the 4.5m and 1.55m long for the 6m). 3: over time may need to clean monofilm to avoid cloudiness (6 months in, no issues for me and never washed them yet). 4:windsurfing feel (I love this crinkle sound) 5: North wrist leash is better (light weight) 6:….. can’t really think of any more, I can’t see anyone being disappointed, they just work and are probably better than average in all areas of performance.

Woah. I'm trying to understand that first jibe here. It looks like you're stepping your back foot up next to the front foot, holding, then stepping the other foot back. If right, how is it the board isn't going down nose first? Great job no matter the reason. I've never seen this before
@stevefollis9454
@stevefollis9454 22 күн бұрын
Your observation is 100% correct. It’s a technique I’ve carried over from Kitefoiling. If you watch any kitefoil racing Gybes you will see that you step forward into the second strap before down looping the kite and removing the original front foot into the rear strap. Obviously, it’s a bit easier with the kite as you have more lift. However, if you bear off very fast and hold the wing a little higher than normal, increased lift from both the foil and wing are achieved. In fact, I can ride >50m with both feet in the front foot straps. I’ll try to post a video of this one day.

@@stevefollis9454 50m? That's hard to imagine. Ok, I see you're slowly raising your wing as you step the second foot forward as you glide. Which foil are you using here? Aqueous wings are developed by Frank Rosin (Famous Frank) and Stefano Moris (Mikes Lab). The wings use mainly monofilm for the canopy so virtually zero stretch. They roll up like a windsurf sail. Very very rigid sail and as light weight as all other wings I’ve used. The visibility is amazing, they tack very good and after 2-3 sessions you fall in love with them. 6m and 4.5m which are powerful so you would need something smaller on very windy. I’ve posted more on Facebook Wing Foiling UK.

When did board shapers decide long boards with long tails were fasionable again? What happened to long tails having too much drag when paddling and pumping onto foil? I was told long foil boards have too much wetted surface area and make it difficult to pop off the water?
@stevefollis9454
@stevefollis9454 7 ай бұрын
I’m not sure I would say that are “fashionable”, the people who have them confirm they can release off the water much easier than a shorter wider board. They are typically used for down wind foiling (not what you see the video). The problem with long boards is that they don’t pump as nice vs a shorter board. Also the extra swing weight isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either.
@Hanssupansnow
@Hanssupansnow 7 ай бұрын
Length is speed, you will have less drag than with wide boards. These shape of boards will also be more common in short length boards because they recover and start earlier planing. Swing weight? That’s not a problem.

Hi Steve Loved this test that you performed here! And as I'm encountering huge (and sudden) spin-outs when riding in straight-line, since I swapped from the Medusa to the Medusa Pro, I have the strong feeling it might be related to this subject. If you have time, could you perform a variation on your test? I'd be interested to see how much the mast would bend (if any) forward or backward, when just using the 1-pin connector. So attach the QR mastplate to the wall 90 degrees rotated as compared to what you just showed and then perform the same tests... I'm curious!

As mentioned in the video, use both the locking pin and 2 screws through the base with the Kraken to ensure maximum rigidity is achieved. Could you please share your opinion on foot straps positions🙏 since the beginning I was learning with from Y foot straps and get used to them. I want to try some small jumps and need to get used to the back foot strap. My stance I can stance is pretty narrow, maybe shoulder width. Should foot straps position be the same or it’s better to have back foot strap right after my non-foot strap position? I put it right after my usual position, but feels a bit strange 😅to wide stance, or wide stance is good for speed and jumps?
@stevefollis9454
@stevefollis9454 8 ай бұрын
I am a true believer of foot straps, I am in both the front and rear straps 98% of the time. I do at least 70% of my tacks and Gybes with both feet in the straps. I think I like the straps so much as I migrated from water-sports where I always used front and rear straps (windsurfing to Kite surfing to kite foiling then kite race foiling and now winging). My wing foil stance is fairly wide compared to other local riders, but much narrower than I have for kite foiling. The method I measure strap stance is from the centre screw of the Y strap to the front screw of the rear strap. For wing foiling I have it set to 48cm, for freeride kite foil I have a spacing of 57cm and for race kite foiling 62cm. For me a wide stance allows me to go faster, but perhaps this isn’t true for every one. I also love straps in the waves as it provides more stability.

- There isn’t a massive difference between the Mode Pro and Mode, which is good as I really liked the the 2023 Mode. Having said that, every small change they have made is positive. It’s also worth noting that I did not experience any significant bagging out with the previous model and used mine quite a bit. - Power wise, it’s very similar. - It’s faster to inflate as the LEI and centre strut are smaller in diameter. - It goes up wind a little higher (probably because of the smaller LEI diameter) - Frame seems very ridged and canopy material is defiantly stronger and a little flatter. Negative: - The windows are not an optimal position, nor where the ones on the previous model. - I’m not a big fan of the valve connection as you have to pre twist the hose so it doesn’t pop off when pumping (same as previous model) - it’s a pity you can’t buy just the silicone seal inside the valve (these can sometimes go missing, so be careful when deflating). If you loose the silicone seal you must buy a new valve! - Too early to say at the moment, but with the original Mode too many punctures to the centre strut where experienced by myself and other users I know of (probably caused by the handle mounting plates pinching the bladder during storage/transport)

The loft is definitely lighter and feels smaller than the 7.0 mode. The Loft seems to generate more apparent wind but expect the 6.8 to be even better (will try it asap). The Loft does not flutter when overpowered and has a huge wind range but so does the Mode. The Mode 7.0 is still a very good wing and have won more races on that wing vs any other wing. The loft does have a different sweet spot for tacking, but got use to it after 10mins. I think I understand your point of view. If I had two mast plates, I, too, would want them to perform reasonably the same way and be 100% interchangeable with almost no effort. The designers did not do it exactly that way. We can offer ideas, but we have very little control of the designer's goals and objectives after the fact. I think it may be an evolving process. You can certainly email the company as well with your ideas for improvement. I think the good news is we have a very good stock of each plate adapter version. Today we have Q30 P02K and Q26 CPO2K. So pick one, and hopefully, your objective will be met. We are not pushing for one version or the other. We stock both. Perhaps having two alum or two carbon adaptors of the same vintage will be the ticket to reducing the change over variables and compatibility you seek. I also know the factory makes changes for various reasons. The carbon plate was introduced as a slightly higher price and might be a better, lighter design. I am not sure, but I do know the raw material skyrocketed for this type/ quality of aluminum to make this plate version. It is no longer in production as the bulk price of alum/ raw goods recently skyrocketed, making it more expensive to produce the more expensive carbon version. Crazy. I would not want to be the manufacturer with all those variables and market manipulation of raw goods. That video you sent was very good at explaining the situation." not exactly standing behind the product. At least Mackite did the right thing. Kudos to them. I don't intend on trying to contact the design team in Italy to give them my "ideas for improvement" as is recommended in the email. Ballz and the crew should be doing this...

I wish I would have seen this video before I bought the aluminum after having the carbon. I purchased a complete carbon Kraken foil system with the carbon plate. I wanted to be able to quickly swap this out between two boards. I purchased the aluminum Kraken base for my second board because I wasn't worried as much about weight or strength. To my major disappointment, these two mast bases are not compatible. Why aren't these the same?? These components are CNC milled to a specification. Why would the company make these mast bases incompatible or least provide the consumer with a very obvious warning. They could easily make these compatible. Why aren't they doing this? The only thing that I can think of is that Sabfoil wants to force people to get the carbon base. This is a very bad decision when they're competing against other manufacturers. I've written to the US sales rep to find out if they have a plan to turn this problem around.

I was in the same position as you and had to virtually give my aluminum plate away. The bigger problem I have is that there is too much play in the kraken connection to mast when using just the quick release pin. I now have my mast and base permanently screwed together using 2 screws through the base of the mast plate and the quick release pin. Therefore, it is no longer a quick release system and the kraken concept isn't something I can use. Watch this video on the rigidity issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHbXomWAg9ijZ5Y

@@stevefollis9454 Fortunately, I managed to figure that one out and it works pretty well... There's a fine line for stacking the utlra thin washers to get the single pin to work properly.

Sun Siyam Olhuveli, but hear their sister island further South is better for wind (Sun Siyam Vilu Reef). You will see in my other videos that pump foil was also great at Sun Siyam Olhuveli

Yeah, it’s not the fasted foil (I can get it up to 22knots max) so not so slow. However, it’s so playful on the flat and in lumpy waves 😍

Yeah it's def not slow I think sometimes speed comes down to how much foil control you have for the given conditions and how much power you can hold down. My buddy regularly smokes me on his ML1300 when I'm the ML800 because he can hold down way more power and stay in control.

@@ozoneflysurfer9491I’ve been contemplating the ML800 but have yet to talk to anyone who’s ridden one. How do you like it and what’s your weight/wind/conditions/etc?

@gnevesd Hi I hate to change topics from this great video but the ML800 is an amazing foil the efficiency and acceleration is on another level it has insane pump and glide and turns very well due to the relatively short span @90cm. It's also very fast if you are into that. I could easily use it as my main foil at 73kg as soon as it's 12 knots or more I'm on it I can make it work in less but also have the Ml1000 and Ml1300 both of which are also great but different. I've been foiling since 2013 on many different foils if I have to pick just 1 I'd go for the Ml800. Basically once you ride a Mike's Lab it's really hard to ride anything else.

@@ozoneflysurfer9491 I agree, if I had to choose just one foil it would be the ML 800 too. Yesterday, I was on the 1300 on the waves in the morning then switched to the 540 in the afternoon on the flat Marine lake. Wow, that’s one hell of a quick foil, I was reaching 29.5knots 😮

Super slick 👌🏻. What’s the name of those first tacks where the wing is behind your back?
@stevefollis9454
@stevefollis9454 Жыл бұрын
I guess it’s behind the back wing pass tack. It’s not as hard as it looks, you first to be comfortable at tacking and pumping/gliding a bit with the wing flagged out. I can provide video tips if you need them (just send me a pm)
