I did FP in 1977 without electricity. Charts, sextant, and some luck. GPS is certainly a welcome helper. Rig works fine, often did days without touching anything, including the Hydrovane. Top recorded speed was 13.7 in about 28kts TW, definitely surfing. Upwind is dry and no more an issue than you would find with any bow shape in bigger seas. Gotta slow down. But angle is still fine. We had some small chafe issues with the yard parell but was easily fixed. Nothing else was any problem. I would never recommend an electric motor though. That was the one truly stupid thing we did.

Yes, i use waxed thread. Keeps the strands easy to lay flat.

There is nothing exactly specific but the reddogyachts website has a good run down. Boat sails well, steers perfectly with windvane while surfing, is dry on deck, and fishing from the cockpit really works, especially when you can drag a 40 pound ono in the back door. Lots of light and air and living in the tropics is cool without fans. A good awning that covers the main hatch assures ventilation even while raining. Only negative is the choice we made to have electric motor, but that is a whole other subject.

So far so good. There are some things to do differently if someone wanted a boat like this. She sails so well, fast and smooth, easy steering, great balance for self steering. We had no water on deck, except rain, but for one series of big seas on a beam reach where we were just going too fast fo the conditions and angle. The main thing we found is don't go electric unless you have a free energy generator. You can't power your way out of calms. Pure sailing is good, we have patience for the waiting, but there is a comfort issue from getting stuck in after squall slop.

@@rosiegreddogyachts4135 I guess there always have to be some downsides! Good advice about the electric drive issue. I wasn't expecting too much speed to be a problem - are you thinking to, perhaps, try out trailing lines or a drogue to see if you can find the right balance for when you next encounter those big conditions again?

@@ozzytorrential not a drogue worthy event. Just slowed down by taking a reef. Ease the halyard, pull in the sheet. There were just a couple of big waves together that caught us going too fast. We were doing fine, going 7-8 but got surprised. Easily dealt with it. Had a deck hatch sort of open and took some water below. Showed us not to trust that things would always be the same out there.

@@ozzytorrential yes...in the magic quadrant, off the wind, she surfs and doesn't roll. Get forward and put toes on the nose and watch while the bow picks up on the foam and lifts off, sitting on a layer of bubbles. There is no forming quarter wave and the wake is flat.

It's Hemingway & Bartlet V-346 waxed polyester. Has almost no twist and lays flat normally. You can also make a good thread from taking three strand polyester rope and breaking it down carefully into smaller threads and waxing it well. I like thgis best of all but when you have to do lots of rings the commercial thread is easiest

The ‘roll bar’ on the anchor makes it set better. It’s great for most every bottom but rocky.

Yes, i was taught that too. Taking every other stitch out a bit farther insured you would ‘bury’ the ring half way so the sewing pattern looked much the same on each side and spread the loading. When you do a #10 ring like that, it’s art.

I think you will never be disappointed wioth the scow form. And on a smaller boat like you imagine the sail should be easy to handle. Just remember, lightness is your friend. It’s all sal area to displacement in the end. @@rocknsail

Not interested. What we do is for fun. Making it more than that takes the fun out. It’s just another job. We see other ‘top channels’ that are having trouble keeping the thread going. It must be so hard to be beholding to tens of thousands of critical eyes. And taking their money so you don’t have to ‘work’.

So far we have only gone upwind in about 22T inside SF Bay. We sailed many miles upwind because every trip involved at least eight tacks to get up to the fun parts… city front, sausalito.in a strong ebb there was short steep chop plus tanker and ferry wakes much bigger than that. I suppose you could call it pounding, but it was more like mowing and exploding. The wave is just burst apart by the lee shape in the heeled waterline and the spray is sent off in a way it never comes on deck except as droplets. We have been able to do 7+ at decent angles made good. There is no lifting and plunging, just steady as. I’m sure we will find out what it’s like to go to weather in bigger conditions, but i don’t expect it will be bad from what i have experienced so far. Seems interesting there is any consensus possible since there are only a handful of boats like this actually sailing. Mini TransAt, now creeping into the offshore 40’s, and a toe in the water for IMOCA. Rules prevent the adoption full bore. This would be an expensive paradigm to shatter. Imagine what your pointy 2MM4 racer is worth if there is no way for it to be competitive, like in the mini’s. I woulkd 100% guarantee if you experienced our first 350 ocean miles, you would be doing some rethinking.

@@rosiegreddogyachts4135 Thanks for the detailed answer. And yes, admittedly, the consensus I mentioned wasn’t all that many opinions total. Just noticed it being mentioned in several/articles regarding scow bows. Glad to hear it hasn’t been an issue so far.

I think the consensus is more opinion without experience. How can anyone have experience with something that doesn’t exist. It’s easy to assume what might be, impossible to actually know without experience. I was actually pretty sus myself, always wondering how it would go. Now, totally amazed. Definitely better than going up the coast, for sure. Personally, i find the talking bits to be hard. We have no good mics, and adding voice is adding lots of time. That said though, some narrative could help get the info about the boat’s performance and handling out there so people can get a sense of how astounding it was, even to the designer who was aboard. For me, the key moment was coming on watch at 0400 and finding Sam and Francoise free-standing in the cockpit, just talking and watching the wake as we surfed in the 10’s and 11’s with the Hydrovane driving. Smooth downwind stability and narrow course tracking at the speed is very encouraging. Lots more to learn as we get out in different circumstances, but so far, it’s OK.

Thank you for seeing how well she flies. It’s really quite challenging to be trusting the vane to drive while surfing dead down at 11kts. But in retrospect we simply let it happen and watched in wonder

I’ll do more narrative soon. All the editing is much harder when you add voiceover and we don’t have the great microphone. We’ll do it though. There is certainly a story to be told.

Yes. No one can ever tell me when and who first put the point on. It’s simply an evolution of the bowsprit , which also was a dumb thing (unless you can rock them up to move in tight spaces like Dutch canals). Pointy bows are empty for a reason. No room up there. But they do a good job of scooping up the ocean and putting it on deck

The description section below the video lays out what I am thinking is the reason she goes as she does. We really didn’t get the entire rig working until the last time sailing. There was always something off, but the upwind was still pretty good. I’ve had several good discussions with the NA and he has been more than happy with what he has seen. He admits there was no precedent for developing his confidence. We trusted him and it came through better than we both imagined. Making good upwind, especially in light wind, is paramount for using electric power. No running for hours on end. The simple part is definitely a driver.

Yep. We've been watching this. I want to see what it takes to make it jibe. We were at least 20deg by the lee a few days ago, the main was fully perpendicular to the boat at the boom. The end of the sheet to the knot. We were totally surprised at how soft it went through the eye and same with filling. Didn’t even shake the rig. What you saw happened after we broke the traveler, the sail was cockamammie set, and that wasn’t soft. It was forced to find out what happens. I have a lifetime of sailing (and jibing) and get what you say. Are yuou basing your recommendation on experience sailing junk rigs? I personally have none so this is all just part of a big experiment

Tim… the sail does have camber, and we are getting good angles, still not fully tuned yet. You bring your junk and we’ll race for beers.

Further, check out ep11… we get 6-7 upwind in 15T at an angle that keeps the feather at the flag on the windex. More and better coming as we learn.

@@rosiegreddogyachts4135 Alas, I sold my boat long ago. My boat was Batwing of Seattle, which is in Hasler and McCloud's book. I took a leisurely cruise across the Pacific from Seattle to Hong Kong. My sails had no camber, and Blondie designed my rig. Is your camber cut into the sail panels? My boat had flat panels with no camber, and pointed to about 52 degrees from the true wind.

Our battens are carbon planks and tubes. They feather to neutral and take a decent curvature as soon as there is load. In am a sailmaker and did shape the edges a bit. Plus, there is some tapering of materials to help the forming of the profile. I expect it will get better as we tweak more and more. Plus we have a very different hull form, the boat doesn’t heel much, the keel is a good lifting form. And only 20K lbs on long waterline. @@timdunn2257

@@rosiegreddogyachts4135 The problem with that is that you get more camber in stronger winds, which is the opposite of what is wanted. Light winds call for big camber, and high winds call for less camber. I am puzzled that a sailmaker wouldn't know that. Pretty much every sailor knows that.

@@mckenziekeith7434 so far its eating up the miles. We have a lot of upwind in 20 kts doing 7 in bay chop.

Wse want to use old school spinnaker without pole for dead downwind, or leader kites. But the sail alone seems so easy. No feeling you are going to jibe with wind at 180. Feels solid and boat steers true. And fast. I also can’t wait for the open ocean version of the trials.@@mckenziekeith7434

A lot has happened to the sail since this was made. Battens and yard are much stiffer now, sheetlets are more correct and we know more about how it works. I am a lifetime sailor, from high performance dinghies to world record speeds on windsurfers. All the concepts of western sails have to be left behind. The way the sail sets and twists and performs to weather in a breeze seem to do fine without a vang. Preventer also. Not wanting to gybe with the balanced rig. Mostly everything about how it is working is challenging my long held ways of thinking. We’re not trying to win, just to finish easily. Thanks for the suggestion though.

@@rosiegreddogyachts4135 I rigged a lightweight vang on my experimental sail, something like on an Optimist pram and it really helped to keep everything tight.

The plug is still ready to be turned into a new hull. You could get Jim Antrim to do anything you liked for the rig and interior. Ask Berkeley Marine Center
