Clan mothers were one of the most important aspects of our culture in our tribes that helped with a lot of decision making and community support solutions.... Our men in our tribes were leaders of warriors and protectors. It was the clan mothers that brought us together to unify our strength in order to survive. They are the reason why we survived and are living here today. And you wouldn't believe it. In Womens prisons 80% of the prison population in Canada is First Nation indigenous women. All the trauma that they have been through all the drugs and alcohol that is ruined their lives. All we did was throw them in a cell and throw away the key and lock them away. Hiding there! My mothers a decent of the Poutrincourt ancestry and my fathers side was married into the Mi’kmaq community via one of Membertous daughters (Pierre Lejeune and Marie Kagigonias). I’m just learning all of this and it’s incredibly humbling learning about all of these stories of our past. 🧡
