I've been a fan of your videos. I've spent the last 30 years recording and mixing audio and the last 5 years deep in ambisonics and Atmos. There are not many people linking video with audio in the VR world correctly. We should talk.

Yeah - either the recorder needs to be pointing the right way, or you need to rotate the audio in post. Yep, let's talk!

have you finally managed to resolve the issue or just switched to your binaural mics? i'm facing a similar issue.. thinking to buy some mic with mid-side (ideally 4 tracks) recording for my walks, because the phone's mic sound is so bad. after a lot of research i can see that the only option within the budget is h2n.. but i can't figure out how to reliably carry it without it recording the noises from my stab and hands.

I have moved on to newer devices. I have a Zoom H3-VR and a Zhiyun Weebill 3S gimbal with a rubber based shock mount. In quiet environments the gimbal handling noises are still slightly audible, but haven't made a lot of quiet recordings so it hasn't been a problem. What type of camera are you using? Is it a VR180 camera since you need spatial audio? One very good combination for walking videos is a DJI Pocket 3 (excellent gimbal) and binaural microphones. To record binaural sound directrly to the camera you will need a stereo USB audio adapter. The Sound Professionals SP-SAPM-1-USB-C audio adapter is one of the few USB audio adapters out there that actually works in stereo, and the DJI Pocket 3 can host the device. The adapter takes a 3.5mm TSR stereo jack so it works well with common binaural microphones. The DJI Osmo Action 4 camera can also host a stereo USB microphone, and it has great strabiliization, so that's anotrher good option to use with binaural mics. It will mount on your chest more easily than the DJI Pocket 3 due to its form factor.

@@BeMeCam well, i've a very small budget, so dji stuff is out of reach :). in my case i just use a phone on a simple phone stab. so, obviously, it's not vr180. regarding spatial audio, it's just more immersive, so that's why i was thinking about it. also, in case of 2ch tracks, i prefer mid-side over xy, that's why h2n is so appealing to me. but h2n has a lot of drawbacks, it's old as.. well, old and it has a significant amount of noise itself, at least it seems so from all the videos i've seen so far, so it's not for field recordings in quiet environment, which sucks. i also looked at Sound Professionals binaural stuff, but i've noticed that the recordings made with them make my head ache quickly, something is going wrong with the phase or sound levels, hard to tell. and they are more expensive. in any case, my ultimate goal is simply to make the sound better than i've with the phone mic, within h2n budget, and to have it at least in MS mode. so i'm trying to figure out the system for carrying h2n with me. i've seen these two videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raSYk3qJjap8oLs and think to make a similar shock mount but so far i haven't got any good ideas on the way to tie it to the stab. perhaps with some monopod with an extra lever but i need yet to find one like that. regarding your new gear, congrats, the h3-vr is much more detailed than h2n and imho has a better frequency response. i think it's a great upgrade in your case :).

@@walkingOmskStrange to hear that binaural recordings give you a headache. But binaural recordings are very dependent on the individual recording them. The shape of the ears and the head affect the recording. So only the most average-headed people can make binaural recordings that work for everyone. Handling noises for the Zoom H2n are unavoidable, and its form factor is not great for carrying it around. Binaural microphone would solve this issue since the handling noises would be gone, and the H2n can be in your pocket or wherever. It would be more convenient to record directly into the phone's video file with a good quality stereo microphone. If you like Mid/Side stereo, the Shure MV88+ offers a good option for mobile phones. It's a Mid/Side stereo USB microphone that works with iPhone and Android. But it's not cheap. That DIY shock mount looks like it works well - but also it looks quite large and bulky for walking videos. Hmm.

@@BeMeCam yes and i'm sure it will cause problems on the wind, because it will get the noise noise upon its edges and slits, not mentioning its sailing effect. the noise can be fixed tho. usb phone mics are out of consideration because i need the usb port for power, the phone drains the batter quickly so i have to use the power bank to keep it going :). btw, Shure MV88+ is less expensive than h2n here. theoretically, i could get some extra phone for recording the sound but it's not that convenient. but it's interesting anyways, i will take a look at its recordings. thanks for the tip and your replies :).

Watching this with VR Ears now, basically an Index speaker clone but possible to use without a VR headset. Am I right in thinking the audio is statically binaural and not ambisonic? I've been looking at the latter as I already have a 3Dio microphone, but not sure if it's going to sound even close to the quality of binaural spatially. 🤔 Thanks for posting this though, had me go get the head gear in a haste to test this out 😁
@BeMeCam
@BeMeCam 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! Yep, it's just binaural stereo, recorded with in-ear microphones. If you want to try ambisonics, the most entry level options are the older Zoom H2n recorder with its Spatial Audio firmware update (horizontal ambisonics only, no vertical axis) and the Zoom H3-VR whose price has also come down quite a bit. You may find other videos of mine in this channel where the audio is actual ambisonics. Even the desktop browser KZbin viewer plays it as binaural (or even 5.1 surround if your computer is hooked to that) and you can rotate the soundscape by drag-rotating the view with the mouse.

Glad you like it! What kind of artefacts are you seeing, in what part of the movie? If you see warping, that is the Insta360 lens correction / compensation not working perfectly when the camera turns. If it is blobby shapes near edges, it could be h.264 video encoding artefacts.

@@BleepingRelics the footage is unwarped (it's just an equirectangular projection from Insta360 export), but the half-sphere geometry that KZbin VR projects the video on to is a bit low poly, and this leads to apparent warping though the mapping coordinates, especially at the top and bottom pole (zenith and nadir) of the video.

Hi Lynda, thank you for your interest! The camera is an Insta360 EVO mounted onto a camera gimbal. The audio was recorded with a Zoom H3-VR recorder which records spatial audio. The recorder was mounted right behind the camera, on the gimbal, so the image stays together with the sound. I used a clicker to make a sync cue, then synced the sound and video and edited it in Premiere Pro (CC).
