As a self-aware sufferer of this condition, it is not helpful to frame this as sexism, misogyny or a way to uphold patriarchal power structures. My own view is that MWC is a consequence of a respectable man’s conflict between desire and love for women coupled with the narrowing tightrope that men must balance to be respectful yet attractive and sexually appealing to women.

We are getting ready to conduct a new study that will look at exacerbating variables, because to your point, consciously, sexism is not always a motivator, and other factors help us understand why some folks develop the MWC while others do not, despite scoring similarly in measures of sexism. @@ModernIntimacy For me personally, I theorise that the exacerbating factor was my diminishing sexual attraction to my now ex-wife whilst our emotional connection grew stronger. We now have an amazing strong sibling type relationship but the thought of sex with her now disgusts me. Couple this with a series of casual/transactional relationships since (with strong mutual sexual desire) and we have MWC. This was not bourn from ambivalent sexism (hostile or benevolent). I’m working on actively challenge this split by recognising that women (like men) are multi-faceted, capable of being both sexually expressive and deserving of emotional connection and respect.

I am confused by your conclusion that my quoted statement is a kind of "objectification and splitting" whereas it reads as the exact opposite in that it rejects objectification and "splitting" by embracing women's full humanity and capacity for a variety of experiences and roles, advocating for a holistic and respectful view of women. One might speculate that such a conclusion could be a consequence of reducing observed behaviours to categories primarily explained by feminist theory without a broader understanding of the experience and nuances of the subject. I welcome an opportunity to discuss this further and I would gladly volunteer to participate in your next study as we work towards understanding the condition.
