Social Security was meant to be a safety net and not a pension supplement for rich people. One solution to extend solvency of the Social Security fund is to remove the limits on taxation of income of high earners and to limit benefits for high net worth, high income retirees. If someone has $500,000 in retirement income, they would be fine if their Social Security check was reduced to $500 per month. They should also subject all income - not just W2 income - to Social Security taxes. For example, many executives receive stock options or restricted stock grants that end up being worth millions without paying a dime in Social Security tax on that income. Similarly, many Wall Street traders receive income that is characterized as LT capital gains (subject to favorable tax rates and not subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes).
@Dolphinfinancialgroupfl2 күн бұрын
Many people receive long term capital gains (including retirees who downsize their home or invest in the market). Should we also apply SS tax to interest income on bank CDs? Taxing only the rich won't solve the demographic shortfall that is crushing Social Security.

I have a pension and retired at 45 with 25 years of service. I went back to work and earn a salary plus opened a 401k. I have been drawing my pension for almost 16 years. II am 61 now and plan to work another 9 years. I like my job and it pays me to travel. I have been divorced for 24 years. I can take a lady friend with me when I travel and just pay for her expenses. When I finally do retire I’ll have my pension, 401k, and hopefully social security. I also have rental property and commercial property as well. I had a plan and started working at 16 for the day I could quit and the only change to the plan over the last 45 years is when I wanted to quit. The older I get the less I want to stop.

The biggest difference with traditional retirees, is they soon get social security coming in. This acts like a paycheck and if they blow all their savings they won't be bankrupt unless they also incurred a lot of debt that social security cannot service. @@paullampert6990 since the highest growing group among the homeless is the elderly, seniors, then the answer to your question is : grow older. Perhaps you’d like to see done here what they did to the homeless children in Rio in about the 1990s? They wanted to clean Rio up (from homelessness) so it would be more attractive to tourism. So they sent in the police and gunned down all the homeless children. My source? Was one of the TV news shows, I think it was 60 minutes, that was on TV at the time. Is that the America you are advocating for? Or perhaps you’d like to see us like Russia where there are millions of children thrown away and living in orphanages where they are given minimal education and thrown out at age 16 and half of them die on the streets within the first year out of the orphanage. And where, even if the child is only 5 years old or less, the government can declare them ‘unadoptable’ and the child is sent to a mental instutional ( which are worse than Russian prisons) to die scared, alone and uncared for. Is that the kind of America you want? My source for Russia, I’ve been there and seen it with my own eyes, had children come up to me in the hallway of the orphanage and secretly whisper to me, “please, please, please take me home”. Heart wrenching! But I guess that’s the kind of America that you want.

The number one reason is divorce! The women's court system is rigged to transfer money from men to women. So, the states client, women, marry an NFL player. They have one or more children. Then, she executes cash and prizes plan, divorces home, and now he is expected to pay for the next 18 years like he was a pro football player -- for the children (really, her, as it is backdoor alimony). Then, to add insult to injury, the judge and OAG -they are a team- generate a monthly Title IV D reimbursement revenue stream on that players back at .666 cents per dollar per month. Using poor man numbers, if team women's court system requires a $1,000 monthly wealth transfer from the victim (men) to the predetermined winner (women) they generated a $666 monthly revenue stream for the state. The women's court system is a big revenue stream generator for the state.

One clue as to which is more expensive over that long run.. .Insurance companies in Washington State pay insurance brokers twice as much to sell an advantage plan as a medicare supplement plan. (Last time I checked it was 800 vs 400). IF there is a problem with your advantage plan not paying as it should.. .you cannot go the Medicare.gov to get the problem solved. Advantage plans are a private insurance plan and it has the same drawbacks as many other private insurance plans..including changing the plan every year so you cannot know in advance what you signed up for except for that first year. Speaking of "moral hazard", the brokers who sell so called "advantage plans" and Medigap plans get paid 800 to sell the advantage plan, and 400 to sell the Medigap plan. So how is this not a moral hazard? The insurance companies can change their plans annually, but the insured person cannot simply go to a medigap plan once they are on an "advantage" plan. How is this not a moral hazard.

The Medicare advantage plans primary goal is to save money. They do not only put up guard rails they straight out deny care. I work in a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation and the advantage Plans allow a much shorter length of stay than Medicare with a supplement. For example, they may decide that a patient who had a stroke is ready to go home after two week rehabilitation before they’re even walking independently. As a healthcare provider, I believe the advantage plans are great for healthy people and people who cannot afford the secondary insurance. But otherwise in my industry traditional Medicare is always a better choice.

Is it $1.46m per person or per couple? I guess it must be per person. Also, I assume they don’t intend to leave any significant inheritance to loved ones. And this $1.46m is additional to social security. Say $2.5k a month. Yes I guess that can give a decent total of about $7.5k a month to spend. Assuming 4% returns. And 2% annual increase. Yes. Reasonable view of what’s needed.
