Funny how he compares costs to another Anglo nation than other EU countries. Grand Paris Express costs significantly less than $500 million per km for a significantly more complex and difficult project.

The MetroLink plan is absolutely insane! Low intermodality - no connection with mainline rail or DART until Tara Street, away (short walk) from Luas stop on O’Connell Street, other side of Stephens Green from the Luas stop and then terminating at a Luas stop in the city. I agree though it stop at a number of important locations which is good but like Luas it is fundamentally flawed. We need to think big or don’t bother, we can’t afford the avoidable expense that was Luas Crosscity, Luas shouldn’t have been built withiout it

I think that Ireland should first replace Atari computers with new PCs. Why? Because at the moment the way roads are designed is a shame. Look at how it is done in Europe. when they master computers and roads, you can build a metro

The only way we'll ever get real infrastructure is if the chinese come over here and build it, because fuck knows the Irish government won't. Hell, they'd sort out the rent gouging issue too

NO NO NO. This metro project will be a disaster for Dublin’s taxpayers and motorists like me self. It will also cause crime to spread to calmer neighborhoods and increase criminals mobility within the city. A useless project to be frank, I will not be using the metro so why pay for it? In my opinion busses could have been prioritized and increasing the number of parking spots in central Dublin - as well as widening roads to decrease congestion for normal people that actually need the car to survive. And for what? To decrease the time for holiday-goers to Tenerife to save a few minutes to the airport???

Our TDs and local councillors pushed against directly elected Mayors, simply because their power was threatened. What's worse is that the people bought the con, except for the people in Limerick, fair play to them.

Please don't be dumb and build a metro. Go for the overhead electromagnetic Chinese cable cars like the Spanish are, which are 1/10th the cost and could be constructed in 1/10th the time ANYWHERE. Having said that, I'm pretty sure the government will do what it always does and make completely the wrong decision. Everyone will moan and vote them in again at the next election.

I am from India and when I came to Dublin I missed the Metro trains back in India so much, the public Transpiration is same as the weather here. It feels like Ireland achieved "developed country" status in early 80-90s and hasn't developed since then. Everything is Outdated and inconvenient . a country with dying population does really need development is what people ask.

Unfortunately, poor planning and ballooning costs on infrastructure projects seem to be a staple of the anglosphere. Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Ireland, USA... all the same in this regard. Too many fingers in the projects trying to get their own little slice and too many approvals increase the cost.

As far as I know cost of an underground metro is 100 million dollars per km including vehicles. 9⅖ euro billion could built 80 km metro. Dublin is talking only 20 km😮. Forgot to mention, very nice video 😊.

The one MAJOR problem with Ireland's development is a lack of adequate leadership and motivation. I constantly see other EU countries greenlight large and expensive projects with a successful endings, while Ireland can't build something as simple as a hospital building... I'd say the only large scale civil project successfully completed by Ireland was our motorway system. Everything else in this country is just wishful thinking.

I don't want a metro. Our government is so incompetent I just don't think it will ever happen. With the amount of time they're spending on the metro, they could build another Luas line up to the airport. It doesn't need to be underground, we just need better public transit.

There is no need to build a metro, it is not economically feasible and there is not enough passenger flow to pay for it. It is better to develop a high-speed tram and DART❤

The Dublin Metro was supposed to go all the way south to Cherrywood, possibly Bray, along the LUAS line. A small, well-funded and well-connected group of older NIMBYS in Milltown & Ranelagh got a high court injunction AGAINST the metro going all the way out of the city as it would mean a level crossing would be permanently down/locked and they'd have to drive 2 minutes around it.

I really hope they finally start building the metro system this year (2025). It's unbelievable that Ireland doesn't have a metro yet; traffic in Dublin is shocking, but other major towns and cities, such as Galway, are not far behind. I lived in both Dublin and Galway, and it was challenging getting home from work due to the traffic. If Ireland had a decent public transport link, we wouldn't depend so much on cars. I now live in Roscommon, the county town, and although we have a train station, there is no bus station, which is also unbelievable.

for my 10km commute there is no direct line, so I have to opt to stay in traffic for about an hour. Irish gov prefers overly expensive, uniformed and not sustainable choices, so it expects the people to solve issues instead of the government, probably by expecting us to grow wings so we can meet the carbon emission goals
