In that situation, I wonder if it might have been better to just let him pull the kayak out to himself on the rock, verses having him jump in the river, and pull him across hanging on the rope.

@@GetOffYourAss It's at 3350 cfs right now. I'm thinking of doing it tomorrow but I'm worried about the recirculation factor under Powerhouse. I've gotten worked by that at 1500 cfs and I'm wondering if it will be more of a factor at double the flow or if it'll be more washed out. Have you ran it at comparable flows? Thanks!

Nice save! With a frame attached it is safer to secure to the frame NOT the bow line or "D" rings as those are single points. Attaching to the frame spreads the pull load across 4+ "D" rings instead of one. Rope on rope is also not the best as the added friction can cause binding or "cutting" of the weaker rope. Just did a rescue where 2 of the guys helping told me they have a friend who lost an eye when the rigging broke during a rescue. Be Safe and like the OP stated never start a trip without a fully packed rescue bag. Lastly secure a extra life vest to the rope between you and the last pulley/carabiners, since they will follow the path of pulling the hope is they would run into the secured life vest and lose momentum before ever reaching any of the rescuers.

Oh jeez. This rafter should not be on the water. But then again, 30-40% of boaters I see on most rivers don't belong there because they think that a river is just like a big natural flume ride like at Water Country USA.

@@GetOffYourAss Hey thanks a bunch! Maybe we'll get to paddle together someday or something if the stars align. I'm currently around 6.5 months into kayaking and working on the transition between class III+ and IV rapids. We just got a bunch of rain/wintery mix here in Maryland, so there is a very good possibility you may be seeing me swimming some rapids on here in the next few days! Lmfao, our local spot Little Falls that I always post videos from is about to break 5 feet over the next few days, and the Shenandoah is rising as well so its looking like a good weekend! Have a good night man and I'll be looking out for ya, always enjoy your videos. Talk to you later!

This video is a good example of why rear deck sweep is not always an effective technique. For rolling in very active white water. Stay forward and come out of your roll in a forward stroke position. And you will find that swims will be less often.

This video is a good example of why you shouldn't do your first self-support trip in a new kayak on a run that is pushing your skill level. I lifted my head on every attempt on the first swim and the second one My knee came out of the thigh hook and with how I had my boat packed I couldn't/ didn't try to put it back and just made one attempt and swam.
