Curious, how did you superimpose your head onto Neil's body so perfectly for this video? Without a doubt, I have never seen such a perfect reproduction as this...with a few slight(!) embellishments near the end. This was bad ass Tom, very well done!

Welcome@@tomknightdrums! And don't let anyone try to tell you this wasn't perfect, they haven't a clue. I've heard this solo (by Neil) at least 500 times, I KNOW this solo. The ONLY thing wrong is where you had to place your cowbells...a little more difficult to reach them LOL

What is so incredible about this is not only learning & mastering such an unbelievably hard solo, but to learn it back in the day when you did not have the internet, isolated tracks, and programs to slow everything down step by step. All you had was the tape and record. Brilliance!!

Criminy that was amazing. I don't know you can know how to play all that and remember it. I couldn't begin to decipher all his beats and hits. And you didn't even have the internet back then to watch or read the notes. Somebody needs to find the zoom out button though.

Man, no words!!!!! Absolutely incredible!!! Perfection in the smallest details!!!! You reproduced the solo with 100% accuracy, including the 'impossible' part of the concert toms!!!! Exit Stage Left drum solo is, for me, the greatest drum solo of all time. It's not a drum solo, it's a concert...it's pure Art, like a Bach composition. 👏👏👏👏👏

Wow man. I’m a young drummer and plan on learning this solo in it’s entirety or possibly the 1988 version of yyz. I know it’s been a while but do you remember how long it took you to learn this? Also do you remember your method of learning? Did you maybe just play along to it over and over or did you learn each phrase and then slowly put it together. I would love some advice you clearly know what you’re doing
@tomknightdrums7 ай бұрын
For sure! It took quite a while-two or three years, if memory serves. Part of that lengthy duration was due to my not understanding what I was hearing and having to figure that out, but another part was not having all the requisite pieces of his drum kit. (No one I knew ever had that many drums, LOL) But as far as learning it, I was lucky enough to have an old school turntable that had 4 speeds on it: the usual 33 1/3 and 45 for 12" albums and 7" singles, but it also had 78 and 16 - both OLD old school speeds no one used, even back then. So I put my 12" Exit Stage Left record on it and set it to 16-essentially half speed-and just worked through it. As I added components to the kit, I'd work out those parts. A long effort, but totally worth it!

I’d say if you just didn’t rush the phrases and held it back a bit, slowed it down just a touch, that would be the closest thing to Neil Id ever heard on KZbin. That’s the thing with his drumming - people rushing his phrases. A little more spacing would make this brilliant

Do you use any electronic triggers at all? Or just all acoustic?
@KnightymeStudiosInc Жыл бұрын
The acoustic kit was mic’d up all around, but I also used ddrum triggers on both the kick and the second snare (to the left of the HH). So the audience always heard the acoustic drum tones, but they also got a heavy dose of all the electronic samples used on each song. 🙌🏼🥁
