The most powerful version of this song ever made. Would love to hear it mixed with a big orchestral backing.

A few days ago I was at a portside market in Tasmania when I heard a busker sing this song in the distance. I was so overcome by how beautiful it was, I momentarily left my group and weaved my way through the crowds until I could hear it better. Thankfully, I caught some of the final lyrics as the busker finished this song and was able to find it by searching the lyrics. I have no words for just how spectacular and sad this song is.

Now that's weird - I was just thinking of this song, didn't write anything on my computer, and now it is on my recommended. Does YT have the capability to read my thoughts?

As a kid in America, I was haunted by a young-adult novel called "Seal Woman", about a man who meets an Irish woman with webbed hands who swims with the seals in the sea. Another related story (modern fantasy, nontraditional) is "The Woman who Loved Reindeer"by Robin McKinley.

When I lived at Nairn, there was a local legend there of Selkies... it wasn't just the islands. (A friend of ours from the Hebridies was born with webs between his fingers and toes.)

English should ever be a second language only in Scotland. A citizen of Scotland must attend a special school to learn Gaelic. How wrong is that?

Lyrics Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Once, our valleys were ringin' With sounds of our children singin' But now, sheep bleat 'til the evenin' And shielings lied empty and broken Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Oh, we stood with heads bowed in prayer While Factors burnt our cottages bare The flames licked the clear mountain air And many were dead by the mornin' Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Where was our fierce Highland metal? Our men, once so arless in battle Now stand, cowed, huddled like cattle And wait to be shipped o'er the ocean Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby No use in cryin' or bleedin' Gone, gone, all hopes of stayin' So hush, hush, the anchor's a-weighin' Don't cry in your sleep, bonny baby Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Jimmy Reed Videos 4:14

General Cope led frae behind to keep his men in order When the English ran he was in the van and first across The border The Chevalier being void o' fear did march up Birsle Brae, man Through Tranent ere he did stent as fast as he could Gae, man General Cope did taunt and mock wi' many a loud huzza, Man But ere next morn proclaimed the dawn we heard another Craw, man The brave Lochiel, as I heard tell, led Camerons on in Clouds, man The morning fair and clear the air, they loose'd wi' Devilish thuds, man Doon guns they threw and swords they drew, soon they Chased them off, man On Seaton Crafts they buffet their chafts and gar'd Them run like daft, man Now Cadell? Dressed in among the rest wi' gun and guid Claymore, man A gelding grey he rade that day wi' pistols set before, Man The cause was good, he'd spend his blood before that he Would yield, man But the night before he left the corps and never faced The field, man Now Simpson keen to clear his een o' rebels far and Round, man Did never strive wi' pistols five but galloped wi' the Throng, man On Soutra Hill there he stood still before he tasted Meat, man Troth he may brag o' his swift nag that bore him off so Fleet, man The bluff Dragoon swore blood and 'oons they'd mak' the Rebels run, man Yet they flee when them they see and winnae fire a gun, Man They turn'd their back, their foot they brak', terror Seiz'd them a', man Some wet their cheeks, some filled their breeks and Some for fear did fa', man

People don't understand this song is about the lowlanders (Scottish Protestants) insulting the Highlanders of Scotland and Catholics loyal to the House of Stuart, hence why Jacobite means King James. It's a song mocking the Highlanders clans.
