The most powerful version of this song ever made. Would love to hear it mixed with a big orchestral backing.

A few days ago I was at a portside market in Tasmania when I heard a busker sing this song in the distance. I was so overcome by how beautiful it was, I momentarily left my group and weaved my way through the crowds until I could hear it better. Thankfully, I caught some of the final lyrics as the busker finished this song and was able to find it by searching the lyrics. I have no words for just how spectacular and sad this song is.

As a kid in America, I was haunted by a young-adult novel called "Seal Woman", about a man who meets an Irish woman with webbed hands who swims with the seals in the sea. Another related story (modern fantasy, nontraditional) is "The Woman who Loved Reindeer"by Robin McKinley.

When I lived at Nairn, there was a local legend there of Selkies... it wasn't just the islands. (A friend of ours from the Hebridies was born with webs between his fingers and toes.)

English should ever be a second language only in Scotland. A citizen of Scotland must attend a special school to learn Gaelic. How wrong is that?

Lyrics Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Once, our valleys were ringin' With sounds of our children singin' But now, sheep bleat 'til the evenin' And shielings lied empty and broken Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Oh, we stood with heads bowed in prayer While Factors burnt our cottages bare The flames licked the clear mountain air And many were dead by the mornin' Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Where was our fierce Highland metal? Our men, once so arless in battle Now stand, cowed, huddled like cattle And wait to be shipped o'er the ocean Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby No use in cryin' or bleedin' Gone, gone, all hopes of stayin' So hush, hush, the anchor's a-weighin' Don't cry in your sleep, bonny baby Hush, hush, time to be sleepin' Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin' Dreams of peace and of freedom So smile in your sleep, bonny baby Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Jimmy Reed Videos 4:14

People don't understand this song is about the lowlanders (Scottish Protestants) insulting the Highlanders of Scotland and Catholics loyal to the House of Stuart, hence why Jacobite means King James. It's a song mocking the Highlanders clans.
