The tortoise attacked the shoe due to its black color. Tortoises dislike this color as it is associated with ravens and skunks, their enemies when they were young. I obtained this information from IdkSterling and then did some additional googling for further details.

My 15 year old black lab had the same issue. It turned out to be a spinal injury on his lower back. They injured your dog somehow!.

So sorry this happened. They might've given him a vaccine near the rear legs and it caused this. I would ask and also see if he got shots at the vet relatively close to just before going to this boarding location - in which case the harm might'vestarted there. The best vets and breeders do not vaccinate ever. I think in 30 - 50 years, all medical/veterinarian institutions will let go of the enture vaccine paradigm. Sciences go through phases and let go of archaic practices as knowledge is upgraded. For healing this nerve damage, I have personally seen dogs recover eating raw blended animal organs and meat with simple canned pumpkin, lots of powerful healing available through raw foods for dogs. Sending prayers 🙏 for your dog's healing and the best always
