This is an autonomous plane, all they do is load the mission, and triton takes off and does everything. They only step in if the mission changes. That is why they crashed one. Triton does not need to come under the cloud or get close to a target to take its picture! But the humans just could not let triton do its job. The Navy crashed one of the AF Global Hawks while trying it out. They programmed the wrong coordinates into the mission plan and the plane landed exactly where it was, programmed to go. O.k. The bottom of a canyon no runway. But when we examined the pictures of her, it was more than obvious she landed and did not crash. Kelly Johnson had an unwritten rule, Never ever never do business with the Navy!

I suspect this system will evolve as the Hornet evolves, with future upgrades, and of course the same applies to the F-35s. At some point I expect that the aircraft will have machine vision and SEE the carrier deck, possibly with IR markers placed on it, to give the aircraft complete real time 3D situational awareness of the location and state of the carrier and landing deck, making bad landings virtually a thing of the past, even in the worst flight conditions. What REALLY impresses me is that someone figured out exactly what words to pick that describes the system and also makes MAGIC CARPET its acronym. He must have spent quite some time figuring that one out!
