Thanks for sharing! hard to believe that just 30 years before this Grizzly bears were catching Samon on the beach spawning where San Juan creek flowed out to Doheny.

Precious. So many memories. The guys in the boat appear to be some of the Newport Dory fleet. My parents in their group would stop there to buy fresh fish on our way to water ski at the brand new Newport dunes. They used to have a pirate ship out in the middle of Newport dunes that you could ride a kayak out to and dive off the plank and stuff.

Great man, great video. Got my first surfboard in the summer of 1962. Had to give up surfing in 2019 due to health problems. Live to surf, surf to live...

I took the S.S Catalina from long Beach in 71 with dad. Pulling to the dock there were big schools of fish around the ship. The orchestra played on the way over. Amazing

Had a 9’ Quigg in Hawaii in ‘63. At the time it was a short board and my second board. My first board was a 9’9” Velzy. Surfed the North Shore with them both. I can still remember this one particular wave at Sunset on the Quigg. I got in late dropped to the bottom and turned as the wave was pitching over me. It was the first time I ever got tubed. Loved this video.

Thank you for sharing surfing history. Patti you're awesome. Surfing is not an easy sport. I started surfing in Laguna Beach in the early 80's, and always the only girl in the water back then. Glad to see more women surfing these days.

Great video of early Dana Point. I was fortunate to surf the area before the marina was built. The Villa motel had a mexican restaurant to recharge yourself after a classic surf session. Thank you for the memories.

That skimboard looks exactly like the kind we made in 58 or 60. The board shorts are definitely 60's or later, made famous locally by Mrs. Wilkes in Laguna. We called Me-pees "Fishermans" because a guy pulled his boat onto the sand in that cove. We found a dead surfer under a rock there one morning. There were the remnants of a house with a piano that had fallen off the cliff years before in that cove. We were in the Doheny Surf Club led by Loren Harrison.

My dad Joe Quigg was born a little bit earlier than Dale and they became super good friends surfing together, and Joe's boards were pretty advanced for the times but also had an Artistic glow about them, and Dale became fascinated by the curves and look of Joe's boards. They'd surf together at various places and Dale made some classic observations of Joe's boards after surfing one day and Dale said, "oh Joe, your boards are so beautiful, they look just like beautiful tits! I've just got to make boards like that. Do you mind if I copy your boards?" And Joe said " absolutely not, I'll teach you how to shape them like that". So they worked together, and surfed together, and had a great old time. So Joe was more into inventing one thing after another, and he taught others like Velzy, Hobie and Jacobs how to do it, and those guys that he taught were the guys who mass produced the Joe Quigg look, and Joe was always on to the next best thing, but he was into letting the other guys bring it to the masses, which was in high demand, and one inventor was not going to do it. This was in the late 40's and the very early 50's. And then it was off to the races with Velzy, Hobie, Jacobs, Sweet, and the rest of the start up shaper surf shop owners of the 50's.
