How did this compare to your 6120 smoke? I’m considering both and unsure which to get. Love the 6120 for the classic gretsch thing but see the Penguin as a more versatile guitar overall

Honestly they couldnt be more differnt guitars. The Penguin is an absolute muscular beast that is a rocknroll machine. It's amazing how rthe same pickups sound so different in each guitar

@jeremyslemenda4669
@jeremyslemenda4669 9 ай бұрын
It's been a while but likely my Princeton I built , that's my go-to small amp for this guitar. It's a clean amp, but I must have had it pretty loud as it's just starting to break up. The pickups have a wonderful roundness to them, so when they do break an amp up(even though they're really low output, 3.5K or something), there's this nice ring of fuzz around the notes

Good idea on the switch. I wire my Gretsches the “old way” by wiring the pickups to the switch directly. So the signal chain is: pickups -> switch -> volumes -> master -> output The tone switch is only in the chain if engaged but I have one guitar where I omitted it altogether. You’re only talking a couple hundred millivolts in an electric guitar so it does make a difference. Great sound!! Oh yeah, I tried the Ray Butts pickup and like you, put the Setzers back in. Way better pickups IMHO. Nice playing man!!
@jeremyslemenda4669
@jeremyslemenda4669 10 ай бұрын
Thank you John! Yep the early ones were definitely wired that way...my 59 annie goes to the switch first then the pots and master. This also puts the 3 volume pots in parallel, instead of 2 pots in parallel. It amazes me everyone seems to ignore this! I also have my modern 6128 wired the old way, with the dual ganged tone pot and 1M pots

Love your playing!!! I got a smoke as well. Don’t get on with the butts. Thinking about swapping them for Setzer Pickups as you did!!!! Would Love to hear your opinion on the setzers in the smoke! Anyway have a good one😊Cheers from switzerland
@jeremyslemenda4669
@jeremyslemenda4669 10 ай бұрын
Thanks man!! I though the setzers were a big improvement over the butts, for just straight ahead rockin and rockabilly. They do kinda have a mid hump/bump, that can sound a bit odd when playing at home, but cut through a live mix nicely. I have since put the butts back and am am going to sell the smoke, as I just don't play it as much as my other other Gretsches, even though it's the prettiest!
