Hi, how do you remove the data with values below detection limits? and other question, only transform to log 10 the variables with non-normal behaviour correct? thanks

how to determine the inflection point? is it subjective? can you tell me more how to determine how many population in the samples?

Thanks for your video! Before creating QQ plots and box plots, would you apply the log-normal distribution? If for a certain element it is not appropriate to apply the transformation, how would you go around plotting? In the case of sulfide/sulfate species diagram (6:53) are those also log-transformed values or the raw numbers? Overall, for what procedures would you and would you not use the log-transformed data?

Hi! Thanks for the questions :) Before interpreting, data are often mathematically transformed to a more normal form so that the underlying statistical assumptions are met. This also improves the reliability of statistical results and enhances relationships present in the bulk of the data. That said I will look at the data before applying transformations, but overall it is important to apply a transformation for further interpretation in geochemistry data - it helps to extract meaning from the data during exploratory data analysis (EDA) and in higher order statistics. There are other types of transformations, but in this case you are correct that I applied a simple log-normal transformation to make the data more "normal..." not all data will require this. In the diagrams you are referring to, it's important to make sure that all elements are in the same units (in this case ppm v pct), but otherwise these values have not been manipulated for the purposes of these graphs.
