this is basically the route I took when I was already 3 years into college. Due to depression and severe unmanaged ADHD I had about a years worth of credit after 3 years, some semesters I just wouldn't enroll, or and I failed some classes. I got my shit together and found a bunch of ways to get credits. I took certifications I could transfer in, took courses on coursera, sophia, studycom, etc. and earned a ton of credit in a short period. Very proud of myself for getting my shit together. (also s/o james scholz). Anyone planning on going to college should look into finding external credits.

My unorthodox college experience was to be poor enough at 28 that Pell Grant and state grant covered my community college. I got an associates degree in computer science. Then for bachelor, I went to the Netherlands and got a degree in computer science. I chose the Netherlands because they had English programs but also accepted American Associate's degrees. Also, it was the price of the community college I went to but, even better, Pell Grant still covered almost all of it. Then for masters, I did WGU, which is also cheap and could use other grants to pay almost all of it. All on all, it took me about the same amount of time to go from nothing to masters but I paid under 5k for all of it.

I did something similar but not to the extent you did. I did dual enrollment and AP courses in 11th and 12th grade and started college with 32 credits. I was in a 3+1 B.S./M.S. program and did summer classes, ended up doing B.S. in 3 years (would have been 2.5 but one class was only offered in spring) and did my masters in 1.5 years and since i spread it out i had more time for an internship which lead to my current job. So I would say Dual entollment and AP classes, as well as summer classes in college are the way to go for sure!

For context, saying this as a former engineering student. This is interesting to see, but I would like to throw some caution. How good of an idea this is really depends on the program and the field of study. You mentioned its harder to self study science or engineering courses, however I argue thats not that big of a deal. The real problem is for some of those courses, you learn a lot from lab work. Another piece of caution I will toss in is, the top portion of an engineering class often consists with a lot of students who participate in competitive engineering teams, whether it be building UAVs, rockets, race cars, satellites, robots or participating in hackathons and more. For the students that discover and get sucked into these teams, the time is invaluble, it is a career accelerant like no other. You get to practice your technical skills, leadership skills, build grit, forced to do recruitment, finances, etc. This all requires that you have time in your undergraduate years. With that said, I think your strategy can shorten the first year for an engineering student, allowing them to possibly move some courses around, making their upper years a bit less packed.
