I think bluesky needs a feature like twitter's old circles, or facebook groups Starter packs can only do so much and some of them are realllly not that properly curated.

I've been stalked, mocked, blocked, trolled, cajoled, and plenty more on almost every social media platform (for decades). I doubt that any other awful app is going to be much different. I'll stick to my website. If people don't want to visit my site in order to learn more about my work... guess what? *I DON'T CARE.*

I was on Twitter for a while, but wasn't doing art then because I had no means to dive into digital art, so I just posted some things here and there for music stuff I liked and never grew. Decided to try Bluesky a few months ago and now I'm at 400 followers and growing and while the numbers are nice, I am meeting some amazing people and creatives, not just artists. I've been more confident to post my art there than anywhere else, so I'm happy that I found it. Here's hoping things don't get shitty...at least not for a while.

bluesky has a toxic alt text culture, i've seen artists being legitimately harassed for not using it, i also saw a lot of snarky remarks like "liked a picture, saw that it didn't have alt text so i removed my like and blocked the artist, hehe do better", , also saw a custom list someone created, called something like "artists we'd like to support if only they used alt text" - basically a lowkey "go harass these people" hitlist. and all these people just very conveniently ignore 1. mentally disabled artists for whom words are hard (is kinda why they are visual artists in the first place, to have a nonverbal form of self expression); 2. foreign artists for whom writing a comprehensible description in english is near impossible (and if you write a wonky one guess what - you get harassed). this is virtue signaling at it's most vile and the reason why i don't invest too much effort in bluesky, i can already smell how it's going to turn into twitter 2.0, just as toxic but maybe more snobbish lol. would love to be proven wrong, time will tell, but yeah that's my take. (also yes i know about #AltForMe but nobody's promoting it, i saw a dosen artshares that required mandatory alt text before i saw one that required mandatory alt text or altforme if you can't alt yourself. nobody cares, in bluesky's eyes visually impaired > nonverbal)

Bluesky has a lables feature that allows you to hide thing u dont want to see and lables accounts that u would want to block. Its difficult to set up tho cuz u have to know the name of the lable account. I also like that when u block ppl u cant search for there name and i hope its vise versa

Thank you so much for all these tips!! I've found using bluesky feels a lot more like Tumblr than Twitter in many ways which has instantly made it feel more welcoming than Twitter for me in an art regard 😂 Good to know, too, that bluesky reposts are closer to Tumblr reblogs, too, where likes don't do much but sharing the post does bc of a much less existent algorithm. That's the biggest thing I haven't been certain of when posting in the past, so I'll have to keep that in mind!

I get the sense that nothing I say will help you, but just know that I hope that you keep making art, regardless of where you post, or whether or not it 'does numbers'. Any of these platforms could be gone tomorrow, and we could all start from 0 again. You don't even have to believe me when I tell you that I'm familiar with the frustration of being unseen, for years. And it still feels that way despite what it looks like to others. The internet isn't an even playing field, unfortunately. But fortunately, it and social media isn't the only one, either. Good luck.

I'm still pretty skeptical on whether BSKY will last but so far it's been going pretty good in terms of people using it and seeing it mentioned. There have been so many sites in the past 5 years that tried to be the new art twitter and they all seemed to have crashed and burned out but BlueSky has managed to stay in the know for good while now and I think that's pretty promising. I joined there about a week or two after it was created and in those early days it was definitely not very active but it seems to have really picked up some traction since that time. As far as posting my own art on there, I have noticed that it does get a tiny bit more engagement there than it does on Twitter. Not big numbers or anything like that but certainly a tiny bit more than what I normally get on Twitter minus a fan art that blows up at random. I think the atmosphere on there is pretty nice and it doesn't feel like as much of a black hole void like Twitter tends to feel like. I've been on art social media since 2005 during the DeviantART days (I'm in my 30s for context) and I've seen many sites come and go but something that I really hope to see again one day is a new art site similar to DeivantART with no algorithms and has it's own dedicated matching forum and groups feature. DeviantART isn't really dead per say, defintiely not as bussling as it was back in the 2000s and early 2010s but still kicking. The problem though is that it has gotten swamped with AI images and even though I don't see too many of it in my feed, I can only image what it might be like for newcomers on that site so it would be great to see a new DeivnatART-esq site. But for now BlueSky is okay but my skepticism will always be there.
@Voltergeist

Same here. I don't keep any heavy attachments to any social media. We're around the same age. You might remember sheezyart. They brought it back and I remember that was the closest thing to a deviantart alternative we had. I haven't used it too much but, a few people have said they liked it and it felt like old-school dA.

i made my account and within like my first day posting only one skeets, i had like 15 random followers. one of which actually conversed with me. you just feel more seen or like you have a shot at getting your voice heard. and it's like twitter in that fleeting moment it didn't feel like a hellsite. it's genuinely so nice. new and different, but really nice. i just wish i could follow tags instead of tabs/ lists, but maybe that will come along eventually.

I downloaded Blue Sky back in November and I have to admit I did get discouraged pretty early on because I WAS paying attention to numbers (which I have a bad habit of doing but I'm working on it) and anytime I posted or commented on other peoples stuff it kind of felt like I was throwing words and art into the void. I think part of the discouragement also came from lack of interaction which I had been hoping for since everyone had been saying it was good for that. But if you're just there to lurk and vibe its definately perfect for that!

Bluesky’s like a 7/10 for me. The biggest gripe I have with it, though, is that it’s had a bot problem for a while now. It got to the point where I had to close my DMs because I kept getting those damned commission bots. And I highly suspect most of my followers are bots; but that’s probably my anxiety talking, haha.
@Voltergeist
@Voltergeist 14 күн бұрын
I'd rate it about the same. I find privacy policy and moderation to be lacking there. The bots I do see are few and far between, but I do know that it's been an increasing issue with more people joining!

I learned about and joined BlueSky once i learned about the changes in Twitter's block feature, like "What do you mean you can't prevent blocked people from seeing your posts anymore?!?" The moment i heard about the website, i flocked over real quick and HOLY SSSS! OPEN SOURCE? NO ALGORITHM? CUSTOMIZABILITY OF FEEDS? AND THE ART COMMUNITY ACTUALLY FEELING LIKE A COMMUNITY? Sign me the FFFF up! Yeah, i'm active there, and trying as an artist. (Currently in my esperimenting phase, seeking chaotic yet dynamic results like those anime-rage scenes)

As an amateur traditional artist I have been using bluesky to just post whatever I feel like; fanart , ocs, creatures etc. I have been treating it more as a diary of progress and learning how to handle my social media account. Though I haven't much idea what platforms are good for someone who draws various kinds of subjects.
@Scalvenger
@Scalvenger 15 күн бұрын
Maybe I’m not approaching BlueSky the right way, but I have noticed it’s FAR MORE DIFFICULT to see any notable progress or feedback on that site versus Twitter. Even fanart pieces, which would usually gain 400+ likes on Twitter get only 1-2 likes and no exposure on that site for me. I’m not sure what I need to do differently on Bsky to have my art not get buried immediately.

I sort of agree. I rarely get engagement from non-followers when it comes to fanart posts. Original works do noticeably better on BlueSky...It feels so strange considering that other platforms that I've used thus far have been the opposite.
@Voltergeist
@Voltergeist 14 күн бұрын
It's interesting, because I've had the opposite experience and it's probably because I don't draw fan art. But, if it helps, go in with a different intention of communication and not necessarily the amount of likes. Personally speaking it's easier to use social media that way if I take my focus off of the latter.
