My late mother had this record in her collection. When I hear it, I always imagine my mother in her younger years enjoying this song! 20 years since she passed. I’ll always love her and miss her!

As a child I heard this song on the tube radios and asked my sister who had the only record player in the house if I could buy and play it on her record player. She informed me I could purchase it (45) but she would play it for me. As I grew older I would from time to time listen to this song. Being from a foreign country I would move to USA and attend a Japanese Martial Arts Studio. The Grand Master, who was Japanese, while he enjoyed American songs, would listen to this song by times and I would stop training to listen as well. I now have this song on my USB thumb drive and play it often. I didn't know how Sakamoto passed but I must admit this video gave a great outline of the singer and song. Seems to me I saw Sakamoto on the Ed Sullivan show and could not believe what a great smile he had. I have watched Japan go through horrific storms with the loss of lives and I felt so bad for the people but they seem so resiliant to negatives. I must say coming to America changed my life totally and this song has such great insight to how I felt many times. As perviously disclosed in other comments, may the victims of the flight rest in eternal peace. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THIS INFORMATION.

The American Version of Sakamoto Kyu is a disgrace to this song, it had no rhythm or melody to it.

At 76 now, this song has been a persistent earworm for 62 years. I learned to sing it phonetically long ago, and love to sing this sweet melody even though my 'whistler' is long gone. I love the lilt in Kyu's voice, and have dozens of recordings by him. It was heartbreaking to learn of his fate back then, but he's still with us when we play the records.

It's an alternate instrumental version of Ueo Muite Aruko. The first few bars are an alternate intro. Sorry - I don't know who's performing, but it seems like an original soundtrack to this doc.

I was 8 years old in 1963. We had a little transistor radio which I took on our front porch and sat for what seemed like hours, holding that radio to my ear waiting patiently for this song to play on the local AM radio station WABC with 'cousin Brucie'. I had no idea why I needed to hear this song, I only knew it appealed to me in an unspoken way. Perhaps the singer's 'crying' voice made me feel some emotional attachment to the 'feeling'. Whatever the lure was, evidently I was not alone as the song was a huge hit! Japanese culture was soon to be part of our youth culture as 'AstroBoy' and 'Gigantor' cartoons began to show up on Saturday mornings. It was subtle and as kids, we weren't politically aware but we liked what we were seeing. It was only many years later when eating in an authentic Japanese restaurant that I discovered that 'Sukiaki' was a meat dish on the menu!

I heard this melody in the 1980's which touched my heart and kept what I felt there. .Today is 10/31/2024 and I just happened to see this beautiful documentary about the song Sukiyaki and the singer Kyu Sakamoto. .I don't know but I'm crying listening to his voice singing. .whistling. . . .it evokes a feeling or a string of feelings I'm trying to capture. . .wonder. .joy. .sadness. .yearning. .love. .hope. .strength. . .

It is not a question of being a good singer; it's a question of getting a the public to like and buy the song. A certain "je ne sais quoi", which may be hard to define which will determine how it sells.

I am a sansei from Hawai’i and this is the only Japanese song I know reading Romaji. Unfortunately, because I born in 1939, I never learned to speak, read or write Japanese. This song is still sung in our karaoke rooms. Thank you for this video it has added more meaning for me after watching this video.

I remember this song back in 1961. I was in kindergarten. My family couldn't afford a Sony transister radio, but others who had them would always play this song on KHJ. They would also play "Moon River" by Henry Mancini. I miss the '60s and '70s. My great grand parents, grandparent and parents were held in an internment camp for three years during WWII. 😢

Why are you stealing NHK content for your own channel?
@matty6878
@matty6878 2 ай бұрын
first of all, shut up. mind your business. second, nhk had this posted on their channel for a year and let viewers know it would be taken down. far as im concerned the fact it was available and downloadable is fair game under 'personal use.' also the fact there are many people who are still discovering Kyu Sakamoto, his life and his wonderful song makes this more than justifiable to be reuploaded for all to see and enjoy. this video isn't monetized so saying im 'stealing' is pretty damn stupid of you to even think up yet here you are on full display on my channel - never mind the fact you upload copyrighted songs on your channel you fat hypocrite. if you have any more dumbass questions id be more than pleased to direct you to a brick wall

I was around 6 years old and we would receive a "care package" packed in a rice box from my Bachan about twice a year. For it meant we would receive more nori (seaweed sheets used for sushi) and furikake (rice sprinkles) but also my Mother would receive beautiful, colorful, translucent 33 RPM records. So, we were introduced to Ue o Muite Arikou before the general public in the US. I have so many fond memories of both of my parents singing as a child, my Dad singing Jambalaya and my Mom Ue o Muite Arikou, among other favorites. I love these memories and would give anything to have those colorful, translucent records again but more to be able to listen to them with my parents again!❤❤❤❤
