I went there last week for camping. Such a colourful place it was.

People react differently to altitude. In my experience about 15% struggle at Dingpoche altitude 4300m and are even unable to continue up. I am lucky to have never felt any AMS symptoms except briefly at Kilimanjaro summit, almost 6 km. Diamox has side effects, but it actually speeds up the acclimatisation process. It is always worth considering if acclimatisation is too slow. Naturally just slowing down the ascent is possible, but not always practical. You guide is not giving you Diamox maybe because he hopes you to get so sick that he gets to call in a helicopter rescue. Guides can collect a $1500 reward for each trekker they can get "rescued" this way. About 2500 treks are ruined by this helicopter rescue scam.

Why do via Tengboche when there is a much more spectacular scenic trail high on the opposite side of the valley? Mong La - Phortse - Pangpoche route offers spectacular views, lots of wildlife and almost no other trekkers. Tengpoche can be visited on the way down.

@@lifeofpo1987 That's good, but like you saw, it would be more impressive on the way up, with fresh eyes...

I arrived Mumbai 59th birthday. First time in India. 600 die on the trains each year .. so the statistic goes. I wonder why only drivers where helmets on the ubitquitous scooter. Do roads and trains cause casualties in equal numbers ? Loved the place .. but it's a bit scary !!
