My daughter bought me "The Natural Superiority of Mules" years ago for Christmas. The artwork and photography is great and makes a good coffee table book that even non mule guests like to look at. I actually bought one for my Dad too for Father's Day and he did not ride but loved it. I bought it through "Mules and More" magazine. 😊

@muleranch3 күн бұрын
Howdy Brandon, no, all Steve Edwards saddles are finished. This video showcases the polypropolene design we used in the past - we upgraded our design to an all wood tree with a fiberglass coating and have been incredibly pleased. Have you gotten the free mule saddle training course?

When did humans figure out they needed to file, float,, the equine teeth? ,,, What tool did they use?
@muleranch10 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, animals get sick if this doesn't happen. They colic and this sort of thing because they can't grind their food correctly. You have to remember that they also didn't eat what they eat today. When they would eat limbs, bushes, and stuff, that would file the teeth down. But they're not eating that today. When they're eating on the side of the mountain without a big grassy pasture, watch wild donkeys and as they're chewing on grass and limbs on the side of the mountain they're getting gravel and that's doing some of the work. No where near as good as getting it done right, but it's what would do it.

My donkeys kicks when I touch her tummy. What are safe/comfortable hobbles for her? Penny from Florida.
@muleranch3 күн бұрын
Hi Penny, this is a horse technique and I wouldn't do it. This really speaks to them not recognizing you as herd leader and they want to be the boss. I would fix it by putting the come-a-long rope on and make sure hte animal responds to my slightest touch. Then I'd take a long quirk without a flag on it and touch them on their chest and then work it back to their back... all along, if the animal kicks at my quirk (or hand) you need to correct with the come-a-long rope. Watch him, cause he's telegraphing... as soon as he twitches an ear towards the quirk, boom boom boom with the come-a-long hitch. If you wait till he kicks it's too late. You need to be good on your timing. Fix it when they're thinking about it.

Not true. A good quality well designed treeless saddle is BETTER for the horse! SO many treed saddles cause a lot of back pain and damage for horses. That's WHY we go to treeless. As IF people would buy a saddle that's just soft on our arse and damages our horses!! What utter, insulting rubbish.

My mules like a ear of corn every other day with their hay. Is that ok?
@muleranchАй бұрын
Not good. That ear of corn is too many carbohydrates for one thing, but the other is they don't digest that corn well. I wouldn't. Mules and donkeys and really horses too don't do a good job of digesting corn.

I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree about company for a mule. Horses, mules & donkeys are herd animals and they don't like being alone. I had horses with the worse case of attachment to another horse you ever wanted to see - actually had to snub her to a tree, in order for her to stay home when I took her stable mate. After about 4 times, that got less and less and she soon realized that he was coming back. End of problem. My molly is stabled with a big draft horse, is she attached to him, yes. Did she give me any problem the first few times I took her away - yes, planted her feet. I pushed her off balance, tapped her on the butt with my persuader, and she walked on. Did that maybe 5 times. Now she leaves him without any problem. First time I took the horse, she had a blooming fit - running, screaming, carrying on. Made sure electric fences were in good shape and left. Every time I left the fit got less and less, and now she could care less. They are best buds, stand side by side & follow each other around. I can't be with her 24/7, she needs a friend and so does he. I should add she is in a dry lot of about 3/4 of any acre with some woods, a lane, nice little turnout. Horse has adjoining pasture. I give her a lot of treats for doing the right thing - hard to catch, nope follows me everywhere. So that is my two cents. She is my first mule, and I have immersed myself in everything I can find on mules. I swear, mules are as different from horses as cats are to dogs.

Hinnies have narrow hooves like a donkey while Mules have broad hooves like a horse. Mules are essentially horse bodies with donkey heads while Hinnies are the reverse.

I took a riding lesson once from a great dressage rider/instructor on her horse who she could make dance in place. When I got on nothing happened. She asked me, "What have you learned"? I answered, "I don't know how to ride". She replied, "No, you just need more lessons". Unfortunately I could not afford them. It takes a lot of hard work and lessons to learn Dressage but a little is better than nothing. It is very important to keep your body in shape as well as your animal's. 😊
