It took me two and a half days to do a variation of out-and-back. Day one was eastern terminus to about thirty miles in and back. That night I drove to the western terminus and the next day covered the rest of the trail eastbound plus westbound to the painted silos. I stayed overnight at a bed and breakfast then did the last thirty miles in the morning. As far as camping along the trail goes I don't feel that I'm an adequate source for information. If you mean just tossing up a tent or a hammock by the side of the trail I feel like you probably could do that in many areas without any problem. If you mean formal campgrounds I know there's a few but couldn't say where or how good they are. I will say that when I did it the western thirty miles or so where it's going more north than west is pretty much no-man's land/farm country/ hard to get a signal. Another thing to keep in mind is that parts of the trail are still closed due to flood damage. When I was up there a couple of weeks ago this included a few miles on the eastern side of The Bend. Seems like the best bet at that point is to just skip The Bend altogether (left on Belfry Road in East Hardwick), should be like a one mile road segment that'll save you seven or eight miles? Anyway, have a good ride. Let me know how it goes.

Thankfully, I stumbled onto this trail while staying in St. Johnsbury in our RV. I was only able to ride 40 miles on it (20 out and back) on my hardtail, and it's one of the best trails I've ridden so far. It's good to note that starting in St. Johnsbury it's a constant 19 mile climb at 1-4% with very little coasting, then 76 miles gradually downhill to Stanton; therefore, I'd start in St. Johnsbury unless you want to ride 76 miles uphill first... Thanks!

I played with 3D back when GoPros first came out. There was a special housing thing where you'd tie two of them together. If you search back a bit I think one of them was a Lowell street ride video. It still gets a couple of hits now and then, but I don't know what's currently available tech-wise. I have thought about 360, but haven't done much research. From what I've seen so far from GoPro, their 360 cams leave you SOL if the lens gets scratched (with their regular cameras it's a $10-20 fix to change a lens).

I saw your video on the Upper Charles Trail and did that last Saturday- really fun trail. If you enjoy covered bridges I'd suggest the Sugar River Rail Trail in Newport, NH. Prettiest trail in NH IMO, and has 2 covered bridges as part of the trail. You need slightly wider tires as the trail is softer sand in spots.

It's too bad that there's still a missing segment between the two parts of the trail. I'd love to take the biking group here, but I'm reluctant to lead a large group on busy roads. When I did it by myself a few years ago, I didn't see much of a shoulder on the road for bike riders. I consequently drove to the section portion of the trail and rode it from there to the end (mostly uphill). The unpaved part of the trail through the conservation area was very rough in a few spots when I was there. Looks like you encountered some mud when you went. I hope I live long enough to see all of these missing pieces to the various rail trails completed.

I enjoy these, but there is another 4.5 miles of paved bike path all the way to the Manchester Airport Perimeter fence with about 5 minutes of road riding where you stop. If you continue .25 miles on North High Street, take a left onto the Franklin Street Extension. Where the paved road takes a sharp right onto "B" street, you'll see a trail in front of you into the woods going over a small berm. Go over this and ride about 200 feet on an abandoned road (this part is a little creepy as it's in the woods). Go left over the abandoned bridge and now you are on Coteville Rd. Follow this for a couple minutes (it takes a right turn at one point) and you will be facing Rt. 28 and across the street is another 4.5 miles of paved trail all the way to the Manchester Airport. Maybe you are fully aware of this so I apologize if you are.

As you know that street where you ended is going to be COMPLETELY different in fy 2027. That is where Rte 93 exit 4 a Will come through. It will be the size of the Pawtucket blvd for about 2 miles there. The trail will be completed then. It has a very circuitous route for the rail trail to continue, with several switchbacks dropping 20’ in elevation going under a bridge Along a stream under the street to more switchbacks back up to street level. Terrible design by NHDOT.
@fretlessed25
@fretlessed25 4 ай бұрын
@@jamesroddy8238 - I wouldn't be happy as a resident along the new exit path, but it might alleviate the traffic that builds up on Rt. 102 sometimes. I saw the eventual bike path workaround is convoluted. I don't mind the extra distance as I'm out to exercise, but a 6 lane crosswalk stinks compared to a tunnel.

The original founder and Headmaster of the Wreath School ( est. 1971? ) was a former NFL football player , drafted by the Detroit lions in 1961 , named Gus Krantz. I had the privilege of meeting him in 1976 , as I was residing in a nearby juvenile facility , and we were allowed to play a mad night time football game under the 1000 watt bulbs at Danvers High football field. He was fuckin' awesome. He was immersed in working with kids in all manner of programs , but that night he was simply introduced to us and it was nothing but pure tear ass tackle football. Nobody could touch him on either side of the ball , but we got to stomp the piss out of our regular staff. He was great and I only wish he hadn't passed away so long ago at 49 in '85.

Just rode this trail for the first time today. I went about 10 miles into Acton from the same trailhead you started at and doubled back. It was a really nice trail. I usually ride the Salem NH trail up to Derry so it was a nice change of pace. It's hard to beat riding through the woods in NH though. Do you have a favorite tail to ride on?
@Ratbas
@Ratbas 4 ай бұрын
I did the Lamoille in Vermont last year. That's 93 miles of stonedust and crosses the whole state east-to-west. Lots of long uninterrupted stretches. That's up there. In NH I loved the Presidential Trail. That's 25 miles of dirt and scenery. For paved trails though I think the Salem-Windham-Derry is the only one they have outside of some pretty short ones. The NH Rail Trails Challenge maintains a list and gives you a patch if you finish all of them. For Maine most people prefer the carriage roads up in Acadia, but if you don't like hills that definitely isn't for you. I like the Eastern Trail that starts down in Kennebunkport and outside of a small gap of a few miles goes up to Portland. In Mass I might be partial to the Bruce Freeman since as a Lowell guy I can just ride to it, but it legitimately is one of the best trails in the state. Down on Cape Cod most people prefer the Shining Sea. I'm more partial to the mainland side of the Canal Trail. The CCRT is awesome for a long ride, but a lot of people think it has too many crossings. The Province Lands trail is also a fun little five-mile roller-coaster. Rhode Island has three good trails: Blackstone, Washington Secondary, and the East Bay. East Bay is the one to aim for. Unfortunately I haven't really explored Connecticut as I should have, but I have done the Farmington Canal trail. Except for a gap of a few miles right in the middle this is a good long paved trail that goes from the Mass border to New Haven and has some nice scenery. I have videos for all of these. Let me know if you need help finding them.
